Hi
Could it have been Stripper? Someone who cleaned the carding machines in mills, from

That was quick, well i suppose it could be, but it definately looks like strepper. His son is in the same occupation and they are in Deptford,London
I've attempted to attach an image, hope it works

Hi,
Well, the others in the street seem to be quite mixed, theres a waterman, domestic servants, a vanguard, and bricklayers labourers. The two females in my family are washers, so maybe its something to do with laundry.?
Thanks for your help anyway

Had a quick search on the 1881 Census for anyone with the occupation "Strepper".  No results at all, so it doesn't look like a bona fide occupation.  Methinks the enumerator's handwriting was just a bit sloppy and that your ancestor was in fact a 62-year old (ahem) stripper.

Did your ancestor come from the place where they census was being taken.  It could be that the enumerator thought he said strepper because his accent was from another part of the country.  Wales or the north?

Wool carding doesn't fit with Deptford in my mind but I could be wrong.
