10th Foot Reg - where do I go from here?
« on: Saturday 20 May 06 17:13 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace the origins of my ggf, Daniel Flynn who served with this regt.
Info I have to date is:
Death certificate - 1886 listed as retired Sgt.
1881 census - recruiting Sgt for volunteers in Chipping Campden
1871 census - with the regiment in Aberystwyth
1864 in Capetown - birth cert. of his 2nd child

Any pointers and help will be more than welcome!
Thanks
Carolyn

Since his wife was born in St Dunstan's Stepney have you searched for the couples' marriage certificate in England (or possibly in army marriages which you'll find in the overseas section of the GRO index whether they occurred abroad or not - not all have been indexed)?
As Daniel retired with a pension from the army his attestation papers showing where and when he was recruited will survive in The National Archives.

Hi Valda - thanks for such a quick response!
I have been unable to find a civil marriage in England; found a possible in ireland but reached another brick wall there.
I will try the military marriage route.
I have tried searching online for attestation papers, so far with no success; I will be in the UK for a few days next month and might manage a visit to the National Archives - could i achieve anything worthwhile in a few hours?
Cheers
Carolyn

The online index for soldiers' attestation papers merely goes to 1855. From the information you hold on him it would be relatively easy to find his attestation papers, either yourself with guidance from TNA assistance at TNA, or by engaging a researcher.
TNA research guides are here. Look under British Army.
