Baskett
« on: Saturday 20 May 06 16:10 BST (UK) »
hello, I am wondering if anyone may be able to help with finding David Baskett/Basket. On various census he is listed as a gardener born  on the Isle of White c 1816.  His wife was Sarah down as 5 years older on 1841 census and their children were 3, 2 and 10mnths and they were living in Fareham in Hampshire. I am assuming from this that they were probably married some time around 1837. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards Diane

Hi Diane,

I noticed that on the 1841 census living in the same house is a Martha Newman age 2, the IGI has a marriage of David BASKETT to Sarah NEWMAN 06 Oct 1836 St Marys, Portsea. Maybe she could be a niece/cousin :-\

Hello Daisy,
Thanks for that.  It would be worth a look (especially as the marriage is the same day as my birthday!!).
Regards
Diane

Yes, Portsea is Portsmouth, for more info about the registration districts try Hampshire at, www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/reg/index.htm or Google Portsea and/or Portsmouth Wikipedia for general info.

Would you like me to look up the birth refs for the children so you can get a certificate if you need to confirm Sarah's maiden name?

Hi,
I can't find Martha, David or Emma  born Fareham or Portsea ???, but from looking at the 1851 census there is a daughter Emily age 8, this could be her,

BASKETT Emily Sep Q 1842 Fareham  v.7 p.72

There's also an Emma Newnham BASKETT Sep Q 1840 Isle of Wight v.8 p.213

She would be the right age for Emma but IOW  :-\

Hello again Daisy,

Thank you for that. It could well be that is the cortect Emma  as the father David came from Isle of Wight so maybe they were visiting? I know that sometimes mistakes have been made on census forms and often people thought they were born in a certain place just because their siblings were. I'll send off for a couple of certificates and see.

Thanks again. Regards Diane :)

Diane,

This is curious. Searching the online database of births on the IOW (which includes "other surnames," usually th emother's maiden name, Emma is in the index in 1840, but no other surname is included.  The Newnham appears to be her middle name.
