Catherine Harrison Death Birmingham 1856
« on: Friday 19 May 06 21:56 BST (UK) »
Does someone have access to the National Burial Index (hope I have the correct name of this document)?
In the GRO record I found Catherine Harrison, death registered March 1856, Birmingham,  Vol 6d page 74.    This lady could be my great great great grandmother.   But the GRO record as listed on the BMD did not list an age.   In the past I have thought I found relatives only to find that the age of the individual was way off.   So before I send for this death registration I was wondering if someone might be able to confirm the age.    If this Catherine Harrison is indeed my GGGgrandmother than she would have been about 50 years of age in 1856.
I have reason to believe that this could be her because she is listed in the 1851 Birmingham Census at 39 John Street and in the 1861 Birmingham Census my GGGgrandfather Henry Harrison was remarried.
Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Hi Bob

I'm afraid Catherine doesn't appear in the NBI.

Best wishes

Karen,

Many thanks for your lookup.   I guess I will just have to send to GRO and get the death registration document and hope that this Catharine Harrison is my Catharine Harrison.
Can you give me some background on the NBI.   For instance in Worcestershire (Alvechurch/Tardibig) my GGGGgrandparents are listed but my GGGgrandparents are not.   Does listing mean that they were buried in a church cemetery and non listing mean that they were buried in a public cemetery.   Or perhaps there is not a clear cut reason.
Again many thanks for your lookup and kindness.

Best regards,
Bob Croman

Hi Bob

I'm afraid it doesn't mean either!  It's very 'hit and miss' as to the completeness of the NBI so they could well be there, just not transcribed.

Good luck with your research.

Karen,

Since you were so kind in the past to lookup my Catherine Harrison in the National Burial Index, I thought I would reply as to my progress and perhaps my reply might help some other researcher.
I sent for the death registration for Catherine Harrison from GRO and found that she was indeed my GGGgrandmother.   Allow me to give details:
Catherine Harrison age 47 died 16 March 1856 of tuberculosis.   She was listed as the wife of Henry Harrison, a journeyman pearl ornament maker.   Apparently her illness lasted about 6-8 months.   Her address was listed as 39 John Street Birmingham.    Her husband , Henry Harrison, placed his mark as being present at the time of death.
Interestingly Henry Harrison's occupation fluctuated between a pearl button maker to a beer distributor.   In the 1841 census he is listed as a pearl button maker; in the 1851 census he is listed as a beer retailer and in the certificate for his second marriage to Emma Hands he is listed as a pearl button maker.
My gg grandmother's first marriage certificate lists her father Henry Harrison as a pearl button maker and then after the death of her first husband, Aaron Perks, she remarried and listed her father as deceased and formerly a beer retailer.
Inshort many thanks for your help and perhaps this little bit of information might help a distant cousin of whom I at present do not know.

Many thanks,
Bob Croman
