« on: Friday 19 May 06 20:13 BST (UK) »
dear rootschat, my great great grandpa met with a nasty railway accident in 1878. an inquest was held on dec 9th 1878 and i am interested in finding out how the accident happened (cause of death: a goods waggon passing over his head). does anyone know where to apply to for a record search?
grateful for any info, janet chard

Janet, try Manchester Record Office. Salford local history musuem has microfilm of some newspapers at this time. Also there is a Jeremy Gibson guide to Coroners Records in England. Hope you find it, Heather

Hi Janet,

Many Coroner's reports don't exist now, but you will often find detailed reports of both the inquest and the funeral in the local newspapers of the time.

You could contact Lancashire records office to see if they have any information or films of newspapers at the time - their email is record.office@ed.lancscc.gov.uk

As Heather says, the local offices can often be better for this information, but it's worth a try.

Jean
