Elizabeth Pemberton - b. Gravesend
« on: Thursday 18 May 06 19:52 BST (UK) »
I've hit a dead end in the Pemberton branch of my tree.
My gg-grandmother Elizabeth Louise Pemberton married Thomas Croxton in Streatham in 1882 and I have her in later census returns under her married name.

According to the census, she was born in Gravesend in about 1860 (maybe a few years either way). Her father was William Pemberton - Fisherman according to the marriage certificate.

Problem is I haven't been able to trace her before she married, no birth reference and no definite sightings in earlier censuses.
I'm taking up the challenge of tracing her again after putting her to one side for a couple of years and would appreciate any info/suggestions you may have.

Thanks,
Neil

Thanks Casalguidi,
Didn't realise they were online.
That'll be my first port of call then.

Hmm, after going through the Gravesend parish registers, still no joy finding the birth of my Elizabeth Pemberton. I'll go through the registers again just to ensure I didn't miss it first time round, but that apart I'm stumped where to go next. Any more ideas?

When later census returns say she was born in Gravesend, is that necessarily reliable? Maybe that's influencing my search too much.

How sure are you that Elizabeth's second name was Louise?

Marriages Sep 1882
Croxton  Thomas    Wandsworth  1d 1046
Pemberton  Elizabeth     Wandsworth  1d 1046

On later censuses I think Elizabeth may well have been adjusting her age down to make herself younger not older than her husband.

1881 census RG11 626 folio 16
6 Romola Terrace Norwood Road Lambeth  London
Charlotte E. Pemberton 28? Gravesend, Kent, Servant General Domestic

1871 census RG10 384 folio 15
5 Vernon Street St James Clerkenwell  London
Elizabeth A Pemberton 17  Gravesend, Kent, Servant  General Servant

It then (naturally) goes pear shaped as far as the 1861 census is concerned. I also can't see her birth registered on Ancestry beta index but I only checked December 1853 through 1854 and not as thoroughly as I'm sure you are going to want to check it. I also couldn't see a baptism for her on the Gravesend parish registers indexed on BVRI.

Regards

Valda

Hi Valda,
Many thanks for that, much appreciated.
I have a single reference only to her middle name being Louise, and that's from her death certificate - died 22 May 1935 aged 75, widow of Thomas Croxton. The address given on the death certificate also leaves no room for doubt (it's an address I remember visiting as a kid) so it's certainly the right person.

It's an interesting suggestion you raise, that she may have adjusted her age. I should perhaps widen the search for her birth/baptism? She's being annoyingly elusive though!

:)Hello,  I also have researched Elizabeth Louise Pemberton, who married Thomas Croxton.  Like you I hit a brick wall trying to find her before her marriage.  She is indeed very elusive.  Thomas Croxton was the brother of my g-grandmother,  Esther Croxton (B.1850) who married David Wright. I am descended from them through one of their daughters.
Elizabeth interested me because I was born a Pemberton, and I wondered if she were in any way related to my Pembertons' from Lancashire.  It would be a coincidence if the Kent Pembertons' were related to the Lancashire Pembertons; perhaps William Pemberton was a cousin or brother of my g-grandfather.  I did research this some years ago, without much luck, but maybe you have information which I do not have.   Would be interesting to know.

Regards, Pemros

Have you tried Medway City Ark ?? I know it can be a long progress, trawling through the baptisms of each church, but, I have found lots of my ancestors that way.... Also, many years ago, there was an opticians  here in Gravesend, in Milton Road named Pembertons..... Best wishes Iris :D.... sorry scrap the optician bit, it could have been Pembletons :(
