See the Grant of Probate for Harriett Sullivan spinster who died 17th March 1869 which suggests that Raines/Raynes mother is possibly a Sullivan

Thank you! That is brilliant. It confirms some of the information I already had and adds to it. It has also thrown up a new niece who I now need to work out who she 'belongs' to!

Not sure if this thread is still active but -

I'm tracing my Ryalls family tree, and we got as far back as William Ryalls (born around 1863). There are census record of his parents being John Ryals and Eliza Ryals. With the ages on the census we estimate John was born in 1827 and Eliza in about 1830. But then the trail entirely disappears, I haven't been able to find a record of their birth or marriage.

The coincidental things is that we've got the same story passed down in our family. That at some point there were two brothers, that had something to do with ships. At one point one brother ran away from Ireland and came to England, and we're descended from the brother who ran away.

I'm beginning to wonder if our family tree suddenly stops because we're looking for the wrong name / in the wrong place now.

Does anyone have anything that shows John G Ryall has a son called William?

This is very curious and I would be interested in hearing more about the census records that you have.  I'm not sure whether it is the same person or not. My first definite record of John George Ryall (born circa 1825 Cork, Ireland) is his marriage in 1866 to Elizabeth Morris (born circa 1840 Sheffield). He is listed as a widower. I have never been able to find his previous wife. The census records after 1866 include his children born from 1867 onwards. I have not got a William (who if they are related would have presumably been from his first marriage).
