Marriage certificate Puzzle
« on: Wednesday 17 May 06 16:51 BST (UK) »
Just received this marriage certificate today and I'm a bit puzzled as to why the Bride's father's details are blank - any ideas? I don't know who he was, I was hoping the certificate would give me a clue!

Whilst I'm at it -
Is John Douglas' father William? (bit difficult to read)
What is the word before Eglingham for John's place of residence?
Naylor - Greasley, Nottinghamshire; Watts - Sheffield

I'd guess because he was unknown as it would have given deceased and occupation if dead

I'd agree William, and the place is Surrey?

I know of someone who refused to have the father's details on the marriage certificate because they very strongly did not want him included - it is always a possibility although I'd agree it's perhaps more likely that the details were not known - at least they didn't make a father up and put you completely off course!

Surrey was frequently spelled as "Surry" until relatively recently. The other matters are more than adequately dealt with by other replies. 8)
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Well I don't think it's Surrey - don't know what it is though  :P

The first letter isn't formed like the S in Spinster - and Eglingham is in Northumberland ?  Although there is an Egham in Surrey I'm not convinced a miner would have found a lot of employment ???

I found Mary in Eglingham in 1881 with her grandparents if that helps :)

Looks like marriage took place in Northumberland so guess that's where they were living.
