Wakefield's
« on: Tuesday 16 May 06 01:50 BST (UK) »
I am looking for relatives of David Wakefield born about 1735 in Aughrim, Galway, Ireland. Married Mary Jane or Elizabeth Wade about 1757. His father was Robert Wakefield, Jr. He had 3 brothers Robert, Gilbert, Samuel. They were all involved in the plot to overthrow Catholic Rule. David escaped on a ship with his family and Samuel escaped to Scotland. Robert was beheaded and Gilbert imprisoned for life. If you have any information on David's father or grandfather I would appreciate it. I have lots of information from David down if anyone is interested

Hello simply4smiles,

What denomination were the Wakefield family?

You'll probably have to look at church records as the first Civil registrations in Ireland were non Catholic marriages introduced in 1845. Civil registration for all other marriages as well as births and deaths was not introduced in Ireland until 1864.

Simply4smiles,

I have just recently included David Wakefield into our family tree, and I would love to have any information that you have.  I only have what I have found on ancestry.com, census records and other family trees.

My Wakefield's were supposedly from Tuam, Ireland.  However, my ancestor and her father are listed in a book about the Wakefields and their birthplace is shown as Aughrim.  I'm wondering if this is correct.  I would be very interested in hearing about the Aughrim connection, please?  Thank you.

I am also from David Wakefield and Mary Jane Wade.  I am trying to find exactly where David was from - the best I can find is in Aughrim on the road to Ballinasloe.

About ten years ago I talked to a man who visited the Wakefield farm in Ireland. He also told me about the Gamble cemetery in West Wheatfield PA.  There is a modern tombstone for David there. He explained that the original one was illlegible and was replaced with the modern one.  Several of David's family are buried in this cemetery. I put most of my research in storage an cannot find the name of the man or how to contact him again.

I am planning a trip to Ireland this summer.  I will spend 1 week on the west coast researching (and sight seeing!) the Wakefield family and a second week in northern ireland researching my husbands family (Fitzroy).  I would greatly appreciate any help finding the location of this farm.

Thanks

Hi Michael:

I have not found a connection to David Wakefield, but as mentioned in my previous post, my ancestor, Jane Wakefield, born 25-December-1822, was supposedly born in Aughrim.  My paperwork is at home (I am not) but I believe her father's name was Edward.

My Wakefields left Ireland in 1839, lived in New Jersey for several years, and eventually settled in Toronto, Canada.

I would be very interested in any facts about this branch.  Thank you very much in advance.

PS  Welcome to RootsChat.  :)
