Hi
I am totally new to this kind of group but we are descended from McClintons of Wigtownshire turned into McClintocks in Ayrshire by 1900. William = Agnes Bruce is the brother of Richard Jolly McClinton - father was a Thomas McClinton. Richard married Maggie Fitzsimmons - her mother was a Caskie (McCaskie).
I never did find out what happened to Joseph Brown either but if I can help anyone by sharing the searches please let me know.
Also interested in the McDonald, McArthur, McKenzie families from Nairnshire pre 1900.
McClinton, McClintock - Ireland, Wigtownshire, Ayrshire
McCaskie - Ireland, Wigtownshire
McGill - Ayrshire
McDonald, McArthur, McKenzie - Nairnshire
Dridge/Jones - Hants/Sussex borders
Gostelow - everywhere
Lawrence/O'Brien/Moody - POrtsmouth

I thought I would share my McClintock line - there may be a connect somewhere.

John McClintock b. 1807 Ireland
m. Margaret Armstrong b. 1811 Ireland d. 1869 Glasgow
Together they had two sons
1.  Robert b. 1835 Ireland
2. John b. 1841 Ireland d. 1896 Glasgow

I have Robert, John and mother Margaret  on the 1861 Barony Glasgow.

This is the last I have of Robert.

John McClintock married Christina Gordon b. 1846 d. 1890 Glasgow.
Together they had six children all born in Glasgow
1. James b. 1867
2. Margaret b. 1872
3. Christina b. 1874
4. Andrew b. 1878
5. Alexander b. 1883
6. William b. 1887 d. 1965 Glasgow (my great-grandfather).  He married Alexandrina Scanlan b. 1880 Glasgow and d. 1917 Glasgow.
They had three sons William b. 1908, John b. 1911 and Alexander b. 1915 all Glasgow.
William then remarried a Mary McGregor in 1929.

In the 1991 Glasgow census I have John with his two daughters Christina and Margaret.

The sons  Andrew, Alexander and William were found in Inverness with a Betsy McKenzie and they are listed as boarders.

If any of this sounds familiar please contact me.  Many thanks,

Glasgow, Sutherland, Ireland

McClintock, Scanlan, Ross, Campbell, Armstrong, Collins

Hi

It is frustrating that the census returns only give the birthplace as "Ireland" for many of our ancestors but having consulted the Griffiths Valuation site I can see that there were McClintons and McClintocks living in the same villages in Co. Antrim and Down.
I have no idea why Richard McClinton born in Wigtown in 1845 changed his name to McClintock by 1890 - his brother William's family also started to use the name McClintock by the end of the century. Descendants now tend to use "McLintock"

Richard's father Thomas McClinton was born in Ireland around 1803.  Some members had moved up as far as Glasgow by the early 1900s but our family were still living in Ayrshire (Cumnock/Kilmarnock) by 1920. I am finding it almost impossible to find out what became of the females after that.

Unfortunately I can not see any connection in our lines - at least not this side of the Irish Sea.

regards, Helen McClintock
