O'Neill
« on: Sunday 14 May 06 17:48 BST (UK) »
Looking for a
Thomas O'Neill, his wife Janet, children Annie 21yrs, Janet Mary 9yrs, David Henry 8 yrs & John James 5yrs. Living in Workington at time of 1891 census, then they vanish somewhere???? Thomas was a Iron Ore Miner. Not showing in the 1901 census, even though I tried numerous way of spelling O'Neill. Does anyone recognise the family, or have any ideas on where I can look. Thanks

What age was recorded for Thomas & spouse Janet at the time of the 1891 census & where were they born?

Regards,
Graitney

Hi Graitney, Thomas was born abt 1849 in Scotland, Janet (nee Martin)  abt 1844 also Scotland. Thomas came to England from Ireland around 1868, with his mother Jane and brother John (born Ireland 1863 - Down) they settled in Cleator Moor, then by 1891 Thomas & Jane moved to Workington, after this time they disappear. Brother John stayed in the Whitehaven area with his mother. John and Thomas were Catholics, their mother Jane was Scottish Presbyterian.

Hello Lynn,

I have like you scoured the 1901 census, throughout England, for the family.............inc male children, as individuals (presumed that the females may have married, so didn't persue) & also came up with a blank. Even if Thomas & Janet had died by then, would have still expected to find the boys. I too tried spelling variations - even neil etc...

Have you tried searching the 1901 census for Scotland, as they may have decided to move back? Just a thought........

& Regards,
Graitney

Hi,  I'll have a look at the 1901 scottish census, see if it shows anything up. The John O'Neill who I mentioned was my grgrandfather and according to older family members who knew him he never mentioned Thomas, or any other family members,he only spoke of his mother. So maybe there was a bit of a fall out along the way or they just lost touch.  thanks again Lynn
