UNDERWOOD = FARROW 1755
« on: Sunday 14 May 06 09:51 BST (UK) »
Robert Underwood (abt 1735 - aft 1800) married Mary Farrow (abt 1735 - ) in 1755 at Lawshall, Suffolk, UK.

Their son John (1759 - 1831) married Margaret Pratt (abt 1761 - 1841) on 2 Jul 1793 at Brockley, Suffolk.

John's Will reveals he owned land and buildings at Hargrave, Hartest, Hawstead, Whepstead and Brockley.

Any information on ancestors very welcome!

Hello,

This reply is months later, but I've been looking at the John Underwood 1759/Margaret Pratt family also. I can only make guesses from the IGI about their ancestry, but I can help a bit with their daughter Elizabeth Ann Underwood b. 1804 Brockely, and with more sibling names, if you are still interested.

Hi theer,

Absolutely I'm interested!

The above is still as far as I've got.

Robert is my g-g-g-g-g-grandfather.

Hi there,  just saw this message,  albeit some time ago,  Could you tell me where Mary Farrow was born?  could it have been Hartest?   I have a John Farrow born in Hartest 1705-1710,  who had a daughter Mary born abt 1735.

Here's hoping you get this message.

Cheers

 :)

I regret I don't know where Mary FARROW or Robert UNDERWOOD were born.

Their marriage banns stste: "Robert UNDERWOOD of Whepstead in the County of Suffolk singleman and Mary FARROW otp singlewoman. Banns published 16, 23 and 30 November 1755". I assume they were married December 1755. Two of their children were Mary (abt 1757) and John (ch 19 Feb 1759 Lawshall).

John did leave land at Hartest in his Will: "Namely first I give and devise All that my copyhold messuage orchard and garden or yard with the appurtenances situate at Hartest in the said County in the occupations of Joseph Maxim and Ebenezer Knopp or their undertenants unto my daughter Mary Underwood her heirs and assigns for ever. Also I give and devise All that my other copyhold messuage orchard and gardens with the appurtenances situate at Hartest aforesaid in the occupation of Ambrose Payne to my daughter Elizabeth Ann Joslin her heirs and assigns forever, And include in this devise the orchard and garden belonging to the last mentioned premises but which are now held by the said Joseph Maxim"

Unfortunately, I don't know if that land had been passed  through the family or acquired at a later date.

I am also interested in this family, my husband being a great great grandson of Elizabeth Ann Underwood. I've looked at Jonathan Farrow and Mary Spark (married 9 August 1733 Lawshall) as a possible parents for Mary Farrow, but this is just a guess. I have no way of connecting the dots, but would like to hear if anyone else can.

Looking through my notes today, I also found this:

1800    James Sparkes farmer of Lawshall will mentions exec wife Sarah Sparkes, exec William
Ransom victualler of Lawshall, exec Robert Underwood farmer of Lawshall,
son George Sparkes, grandson George Sparkes, granddau Ann Sparkes, grandson James Sparkes,
grandson John Sparkes, children of wife Sarah Sparkes, land in Hartest, will proved
   1803.
From:http://www.prattens.co.uk/FAMILIES/SPARKES/TEXT.TXT

This could be referring to Robert Underwood 1735 (or possibly a son) and perhaps strengthening the theory that Robert's wife Mary Farrow was the daughter of Jonathan Farrow and Mary Spark.

Theevathl, is there any way you could post John Underwood's entire will or tell me where you found it? We have corresponded before, but I have lost your e-mail address.

Thank you

Hi Pua,

Yes, I did have that reference.

The Will is quite long - email me ***** and I'll send it through, together with my transcription.

Sorry Pua

I just realised the moderator has removed my email address, suggesting I use the "Personal Messaging System". Probably easy, if you know what it is, but a shame he didn't let me know that my post had been altered!

So, here's the first half of the full text of the 1829 will:

This is the last Will and Testament of me John Underwood of Brockley in the County of Suffolk, farmer, made this seventeenth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty nine in manner following

namely first I give and devise All that my copyhold messuage orchard and garden or yard with the appurtenances situate at Hartest in the said County in the occupations of Joseph Maxim and Ebenezer Knopp or their undertenants unto my daughter Mary Underwood her heirs and assigns for ever.

Also I give and devise All that my other copyhold messuage orchard and gardens with the appurtenances situate at Hartest aforesaid in the occupation of Ambrose Payne to my daughter Elizabeth Ann Joslin her heirs and assigns forever, And include in this devise the orchard and garden belonging to the last mentioned premises but which are now held by the said Joseph Maxim

And I give and devise All that my undivided third part of a freehold and copyhold farm lands and premises at Hargrave in the said County and all my legal and equitable right herein unto my executors hereinafter named and their heirs upon trust that they my said executors or the survivor of them or the heirs of such survivor do absolutely sell the same either by Public Sale or private contract for the most money to be reasonably procured for the same. And the money arising from such sale after payment of all expenses attending the same I give and bequeath unto and to be equally divided between my sons Thomas and James and my daughters Mary and Elizabeth Anne share and share alike

And whereas the copyhold parts of the said farm have not yet been surrendered by Susan Wood of whom the same were purchased but the same remain in her name In trust for me now I do hereby direct and require the said Susan Wood or her heirs to surrender the said copyhold parts to my said executors and their heirs or to such other person as they may direct for the purpose of this my Will

And I declare that the receipt of my said executors or of the survivor of them or of his heirs shall be a good and sufficient discharge to the purchaser or purchasers of the said premises for so much money as shall be expressed in any such receipt and that he she or they shall not be liable to see to the application of such purchase money nor be answerable for the misapplication or nonapplication thereof of any part thereof

And I give and bequeath to my son John Underwood all the household furniture farming stock and other effects belonging to me and now being in his possession upon his farm at Hawstead in the said County or in the adjoining parishes subject nevertheless to the payment of an Annuity of Twenty Pounds by quarterly instalments to my said wife for her life to commence at the next quarter day after my decease
