Glancy and O'Brien, Leitrim to Glasgow

Hi all,

I have the following Glancy ancestors:

Thomas Glancy, b. about 1796, Ireland, married Bridget Glancy b. about 1800 (several sources maintain this was her maiden name),  Both had died before 1857, place unknown.

Children were:

Mary Glancy, b. about 1821, Ireland.  Married Thomas O'Brien (parents James and Mary McGowan) in Jan 1840, in Barr of Farrow, Glenfarne, Co. Leitrim, Ireland.  The O'Briens came from Ireland to Scotland sometime between 1844, when son James was born in Ireland, and 1850, when son Thomas was born in Lanark.  I have most information available for the O'Briens from this point.  It appears that Mary's sisters were living with her in the 1851 census.

Rose Ann Glancy, b. about 1831 Ireland, and married Arthur Lavery in Glasgow in 1857.

Catherine Glancy, b. about 1835, Ireland.

Patrick Glancy, b. about 1837, Ireland. (He is a witness to sister Rose Ann's marriage in 1857)

I am  a new member to this site and saw your topic of the O'Brien's.  Iam an O'Brien descendant  as well from Leitrim people who emigrated to Glasgow before going to the States.  What I also find as common are the Christian names of the O'Brien relations which are common to my family.

My gr.gr grandfather Daniel O'Brien son Of Daniel O'Brien married Margreat Rooney both of Faughary(Manor Hamilton) Killesnet.  Left for Glasgow 1863 having a child Alice in Lanark and arriving in Boston 1866.  My gr. grandfather was born in Boston 1875 followed by brother Thomas. I am the fourth James.
Glenfarne and Manor Hamilton are ten ml away there may be a connection

Dear Nina:   Thank you for your responce, unfortunantly I cant seem to locate your suggestion in regards to Alice born in Glasgow.  Her parents(my gr.gr. grandparents) were married in the Killesnet area Faughary townland around 1858.  Daniel O'Brien b. 1834 m. Margaret nee Rooney b. 1839.  They had a girl b. in Faughary 1858 a son Patrick F. b1860, son John in Faughary 1861 and Catherine b. Faughary 1863.  The next child Alice b. 1864 in Glasgow.  They arrived in Boston in !866.
I have a suggestion my self.  I was concerned that maybe I wasnt an O'Brien decenandant from Brian Boru and that my name was a evolution of Mc Brien which is a true Leitrim tribal name or O'Harts O'Briens of Donegal through the O'Neill line.  I took A DNA test through the O'Brien clan sponsorship and found that I am related to "The O"Brien" by some where in the range of 16 generations which is within 2 hundred years.  You might want to do this as well.  My quest is to find relations and to Know how, when and WHY these O'Briens came so far North so short of a time since the transplantation.  The landed gentry of Tottenham married a Clare women by the name of Crowe in the late 1700 who lived in Glenfarne House maybe these O'Briens came with her

Dear Nina: Please excuse the lateness of my reply and thanks for the work you have done.  The Alice O'Brien is of of my family, she never married unfortunately and is buried with her parents my gr. gr. grandparents in Hyde Park( part of Boston) Mass USA. Also thank you for the tip (Mormon Archive) Rose 1858, Patrick 1860, John 1861 and Catherine 1863 all born in Faughary Leitrim are all the brothers and sisters of Alice.  Patrick I knew of through  stories of my own gradfather( I am 48) and Catherine also never married and is buried with her parents.  Iam very lucky because I was also raised in Hyde Park and the cemetery is where I will be also placed where they are all buried.
Is there a census of that time period when they where in Glasgow or what was the area like at that time?  Did our people live near each other at the same time?  What did they do for work?  etc

Scottish census was taken every ten years just like the rest of the U.K. Latest available for Scotland is 1901.

  Tottenham? That is absolutely spooky! Forgive me for jumping in here with such a banality. But, this is just too 'coincidental' to ignore.

 I'm in Co. leitrim. My nearest town is Mohill. My local pub there is owned and run by Jim O'Brien.

 Yeah. So what?

So this: Jim's windows are all stained glass. He has a pint of Guinness on one half of the front window. Pint of Heinniken on the other side.  But it's the front door ..... The glass of his taverns front door depicts the crest of what I take to be his favourite football team ..... Tottenham Hotspurs! 

 Why??? Why not Man Utd like, seemingly, most of the rest of the world? What has drawn Jim O' Brien to Tottenham? I wonder if there is some familial link that's put that idea into his head?

I am very interested in any connection between myself and the O'Briens / Glancys. Wonder if anyone could help me find the ancestors of my grandmother, Annie Glancy, who came to Glasgow from Ireland at the tender age of 1 year, and was adopted by Robert Mackay and Catherine Macinnes, Clyde St. ? She appears in 1891 Census as "Annie Glancy", but parents changed her name to "Mackay". Don't know if she was related to any of the above.

My Granfather's name was Patrick Glancy, he was married to Margaret Glancy (nee Holland) they lived in govan and had 6 children 2 boys 4 girls. Patrick dies on holiday in the isle of man when I was 2 1977... I would love to know from anyone who knew them as I am trying to trace my grandfathers family because after his death we lost touch. My mother's name is Agnes Gibson (nee Glancy)
