How to find if someone was in the navy?
« on: Saturday 13 May 06 12:56 BST (UK) »
On a birth certificate that I have it lists the fathers occupation as Seaman. Does this mean that he was in the navy?  and if so how can I trace him as he does not appear on any of the census's and I only know his name from the birth cert.

I know there is an online navy records search but my man would've joined before 1873.

It could be Merchant Navy, as Royal Navy useally has RN .

The only census with Royal Naval ships on that I have come across is the 1861.

It lists all the ships and crews
