FIELD Richard b1807 Dewsbury
« on: Saturday 13 May 06 12:42 BST (UK) »
Hello all,
I have found ancestors back to Ben Field born abt1840 father of Ernest b1880 F of Dick (my grandfather) all from Dewsbury Yorks.
Any help verifying link to Richard b1807 or others please.
I would love to break the 1800 barrier!
thanks

Hi mrf,

The 1841 census has several possible Benjamin Field's of the right age in Dewsbury, but only one is down as Ben
instead of a Benj* variation:

HO107/1268/5 4 1
Middle Road

Richd Field, 30, Cordwainer, yes
Susey, 30, yes
Frank, 14, Shoe m j, yes
Ben, 21? month, yes

The only way of proving it is your man wouls be to get hold of Ben's the marriage cert, I suppose. Though as said before, he is the only 'Ben' throughout census returns.

Thanks Tanja,
I agree it is the most likely family. In 1851 Richard is noted as a confectioner and Ben as a cordwainer.
Our Ben is a weaver later on and is listed as a Lamp Lighter (in 1903) on the marriage certificate for Ernest. Such changes in occupation are a little disconcerting.
By cooincidence? Ernest's father in law Sam Fox was a shoemaker.
Looking onwards...
Would I get beyond 1800 if I could get Richard's marriage cert? I believe (from BMD) it is to a Susan Kilburn reg in 1837. Would the father's name be on the certificate?

You are very lucky if the marriage occurred in 1837. Yes, the father's names and occupations would be on the cert.

However their son Frank is already 14 in 1841. Do you assume he's from a first marriage? How will you know it's the right marriage? It would be safer to order Ben's birth cert first, in order to check his mother's maiden name. (And I must say if he were mine, I'd also get hold of his marriage cert in order to make sure not to bark up the wrong tree)

thanks
There do seem to be a couple of instances on various branches of our tree where marriages appear to have taken place for the second rather than first child. I was quite surprised as I thought "living over the brush" was seriously frowned on. I will search out the certificates for Ben.
