convict indexes NSW - where?
« on: Friday 12 May 06 03:31 BST (UK) »
Hello all

I have found several new names in the family who were sent to Aus 1837ish as convicts from Norfolk.

They are not listed in the TAS archives lists - though one is - so - the others must have been sent to NSW.

Where do I access convict lists - or - how do I find out where, when, how, they arrived?

Hi there,
You may like to check 'Google' out for 'Convicts to Australia'.
(there are a few sites).

Hi Penshurst,

Would you list your convicts names - I'm sure it would be of interest to many.

All the best,
Gail (in Australia) :)

This is a good place to start

www.records.nsw.gov.au

Online indexes for convict information, Tickets of Leave, Pardons, will probably display year and ship.

If you list your convicts names and anything else you know about them I am sure there will be a few Rootschatters willing to help.

Hi,

Another excellent site is Genseek Genealogy on http://www.genseek.net/index.htm   It has lots of different Aussie & NZ lists so you have to pick the appropriate ones.  I found a convict who was transported to NSW there when I couldn't find him anywhere else - he wasn't even on the official NSW National Archives site.

Good Luck with the search.

Hello all

Many thanks for your responses.

I have searched the Tas archives - no-one of the names I am after - and - I have searched the suggested websites - again no-one of the names I am after.

These are the names -
Samuel 45 and Sarah 46 Rumble/Rumball or similar spelling
William 45 , John 35 and Sophia 24 Tuck.
They were all sentenced to up to 14 years transportation in 1836/7.

Now I think that SA and Vic didn't take convicts at this time so it has to be NSW.

I am going to try and search the online NSW BDMs to see if Sophia anyway married and maybe find the death of the others.

That is all I know at present.

I am surprised that NSW doesn't have a searchable listing of convicts like Tas.   What does one have to do to find a convict connection in NSW?

Hi Joy,
There are alot of resources for finding convicts in NSW, not all of them are online but we can always do lookups for you if we are near a library that holds the records.
I have never found any ticket of leave or certificate of freedom for one of my convicts (she arrived in 1817) but I have Permissions to Marry, birth and death certs of children and husbands, etc.
Where did you find the information about your convicts, and when they were transported?

Hello Cazay

That's wonderful - I especially want to find the Rumble/Rumball people as they are known direct links and I have spent years at this brickwall - maybe the others are family too but I can't prove it at the moment.  There appears to be quite a story behind this lot - the only bit of excitement in my whole family tree.

Now -  for Tas records I just wrote away naming the person and back came the records [not free of course].  Is this what you do for NSW?   Where do you write?
