Hi.
This is the only thing I've got on Findlay.  James Findlay's wife was Barbara Marshall.

Freecen have got quite a lot of 1841 Aberdeenshire parishes online and of course scotlandspeople.gov.uk have pay per view census back to 1841 - you might try that if you haven't already.
Good luck.
Over and out :-))

Hello Rena
I am descended from John Shirras and Isobel Smith of Aberdeen through their son Joseph who married Annie Thom. Have recently found John's christening in Keig with a completely different spelling - how many can there be?
He was christened on Dec 23rd 1767 and his father was William Shirraws. In 1767, William was 'in' Brindy, Keig. Further research resulted in a marriage between William Shirraws and Elizabeth Tough. Banns called in both Premnay and Keig.
The search goes on!
Pat

Wow Pat!!  :o

I can't get over you coming across my OH's Shirras details which I thought were well hidden.

Well done for digging out that crock of gold - and thank you VERY much for telling me.  I'd love to know more detail, occupation, etc and maybe a copy of the cert(s)

Can I PM you please?

Thanks again for the info

Cheers,
Rena

Hello Rena

This website won't let me send the TIFF file with John Shirraws's christening record. Don't know why, maybe its too large.

Anyway, I will try to save the file in a less bulky format if I can.

I assume from your surname interests that you are descended from William Shirras and Jessetta Findlay. If that is so, we are distant cousins!

John had 3 sisters - Agnes, Elizabeth and Margaret - and one brother - William. All born and christened in Keig. There is no gravestone for any of them in Keig. However, their son John (married to Isobel Smith) has a stone in the Spital Cemetery in Aberdeen. It just says 'The family burial ground of John Shirras' - how informative.

John and Isobel got married in May 1802. It isn't in the OPRs but I found it in the Parish Clerk's records in the Aberdeen City Council archive. Must have been omitted in error. In the record, Isobel is described as daughter of James Smith, shoemaker, Old Meldrum.

Isobel was John's second wife. His first wife was Isobel Neil from Banff. They were married in Banff on 5th May 1799, she had a still born child in March 1800 and died 4th Feb 1801 at the New Inn where John was a 'hostler'. The burial records can be found in the Archive and the earlier ones in the ANESFHS office in King Street.

Sorry if this is all old news to you but I don't know how much you have.

I'm not sure what you mean by PM. Can you let me know and I will oblige if I can.

Cheers from your cousin Pat

Hi Pat,

I can't thank you enough for imparting all the names & dates and for going to all the trouble of trying to send the image, which is probably too large to be accommodated on this site.
I can't wait to see it  :o

I've sent you a PM (Private Message) giving an address to which you can send the image and it explains my relationship to the Shirras line through my late husband and his brother who is extremely interested in his father's family.

The last time I was in Aberdeen was in 1956 with my parents to visit relatives who have now all gone to a better place.
