CROSS or CROFS of West Quantoxhead, Somerset
« on: Wednesday 10 May 06 06:26 BST (UK) »
Looking for information on the Crofs or Cross family of West Quantoxhead, Somerset.

Robert Crofs married Mary Wilcox 26 Dec 1820 in W Quantoxhead.

Children located are:
Lena       b1821
James     b1823
Louisa     b1825
Elizabeth  b1827
Jane        b1830
Charles   b1831
Charlotte  b1834

Charles Crofs emigrated to Australia probably about 1850, where he married Harriet Carter and settled in the Tallangatta region of Victoria.  Soon after this the family surname changes in the records from Crofs to Cross.

I have traced Robert and Mary through the UK censuses, but haven't located any of the other children.  Any information or family contacts welcomed :)

The Crofs spelling may well come from the old way of writing double s which looked like an f.

The following notes have been taken from my research into the arrival of this branch of the CROSS family in Australia.

As a descendant of James CROSS I remain interested in learning how and when James entered Australia as well as any photographs and information on the following branch of this family (James CROSS>George Alfred CROSS>Mary Amelia Sarah KELTON (nee CROSS)>Gladys Sylvia KELTON.

Arrival of the Cross family in Australia:

James siblings (Louise, Elizabeth, Jane and Charles) emigrated to Australia as assisted passengers on the "Emperor" although James' name was not included on the passenger list. This passage commenced at Plymouth on 24th July 1848 and ended with their arrival in Sydney on the 4th November1848. As the second oldest child in the family (and the oldest to emigrate) I suspect that James travelled to Australia first and paved the way for them to follow. The NSW State Records note that assisted immigrants were frequently sponsored by a relative living in Australia. Working on the assumption that James was aged 18 at the time that he travelled alone to Australia and that his siblings followed him to Australia, I suspect that James arrived in Australia between 1838 and 1848. Given that James' siblings arrived in Sydney in 1848 and he married in Sydney in 1855 (at this stage the earliest record that I have of James in Australia). It is logical to assume that he also arrived in Sydney.

It is interesting to note that at some stage the paths of the children of Robert Cross and Mary Wilcox diverged considerably. James' eldest sister, Lena, remained in England with her parents and youngest sister Charlotte before marrying Thomas Walker in 1862. She eventually died in her home town of West Quantoxhead, Somerset. Charlotte married William Dearth in 1859 and raised a family in Middlesex, England.

Louise married John Thomas Devlin in 1853 and ultimately died in Adelong, New South Wales. James married Sarah Charlotte Topping in Sydney in 1855 but had relocated to Yackandandah, Victoria by 1856 in time for the birth of their first child James Richard. Elizabeth married Henry Thompson in Surrey Hills, Sydney in 1857 after James had relocated to Victoria. Jane married John Clarke in Hobart in 1860 and remained in Tasmania until her death in Longford in 1897. Charles married Harriot Carter in Victoria in 1856 and settled in the Tallangatta region of Victoria.

Thanks for the information on Charles' movements in Australia, which had been missing until I discovered this chain.  :)
