Death in foreign parts.
« on: Monday 08 May 06 21:24 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to find a cause of death when it occurred in a different country?  My ancestors died in Fiji in 1867 and New Zealand in 1902 but where would I start to research them.  I got these details from IGI but I want further information.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Kind regards.

Death records can be found at the National Archives of Fiji as well as the Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages. Records found at the BDM office are as follows -

Birth Records : 1877 to Current
Marriage Records : 1871 to Current
Death Records : 1877 to Current

Death records will have cause of death, place of death, death informant, as well as typical details such as the deceased's dob, place of birth and parents names (if known).

The National Archives holds records from 1875 but records prior to this and dating as far back as the 1830s can be found within the Methodist Church records which is a separate section of the Archives.

It is also worth checking Overseas Deaths and Deaths at Sea on sites such as Findmypast, especially for the first one. If you get a hit you can order a certificate from the UK GRO, which should have more than is on a burial register.
