Birth of Maria JAMES
« on: Monday 08 May 06 14:17 BST (UK) »
I'm hoping someone can help overcome what has been a long term problem. My GG Grandmother Maria JAMES was born about 1831 in Warwickshire. Her first husband was CLARK(E) but I don't know anything about him. Her second husband was William ANDREWS born 1821 Devonport. He died 16/03/1887 at 91 St Pauls Road, Islington, Middlesex. This is where William and Maria brought up their family.
I'm looking for Maria's parents (and William's) and her marriage to Clarke(e).

TIA

Stephen.

Hi Stephen,

What do you know exactly so that we don't go searching for things you already have? I see on one census she says she was born in Coventry. In 1871, she says Warwick, Warwickshire and in 1861 she says plain Warwick. William says Devonport on 2 census returns, but London in 1871 and I can't spot one born Devonport before 1861 so far.

When did Maria marry William? (I take it you don't have the cert which would show you her father's name?). I see they have a son Walter age 14 in 1871, who is not with them in 1861. Have you already searched for him to check whether he is with grandparents? Is he both William and Maria's son?

Sorry, only questions and no answers here.

Tanja  :)

The nearest I can see for Maria in 1851 is
HO107/1584 97 16
Deptford St Paul, Kent
6 Carlton Cottages

Ann Dodd, head, wid, 58, Annuitant, b. US Carolina
Elizabeth Eaton, granddau, 14, scholar, at home, b. Liverpool
Maria James, visitor, unm, 20, b. Warwick
Charles Trousdell?, visitor, unm, 23, Mariner, b. Ireland Limerick
Alfred Welton, visitor, unm, 21, Engineer's draughtsman, b. Kent Deptford

Hard to tell if this is her - and not very useful anyway  :(

Thanks Tanja,
You have basically summed up all we know, we believe William had a sister Elizabeth who married Lukies.

Do you know where and when Maria and William were married? Where do you know she was previously married to a Mr. Clarke from?

On the birth cert for their daughter Elizabeth 18/09/1861 it states mother's name Maria Andrews formerly CLARKE. Maria was the informant, they lived at 1 Ann's Terrace, Liverpool Rd. Islington West.
On the birth cert for William Henry born 18/12/1863 it states mother's name Maria formerly CLARK.
On the b.c. for Miriam born 13/12/1865 mother's name was formerly CLARK, informant was Wm. Andrews at this time their address was 95, St Pauls Road, Islington.
I'm getting to the point now.
On the b.c. for Albert born 29/06/1873 mother's name is Maria ANDREWS late CLARKE formerly JAMES. They were now living at 91 St Paul's Road.
We also have a b.c. for Walter William ANDREWS born 3/7/1857 father William Andrews, mother Eliza Jane ANDREWS formerly HOAR. But the fathers occupation was shoemaker and the address was 27, Charles St. Islington Green.

The plot thickens.

Ooh - can you hear my giant *sigh*   :-\

I suppose the thing to do would be to check all marriages for William Andrews (we don't even know where, really) between 1860 and 1857 or even 1851 if this Walter isn't yours, and check whether there is a Maria Clark (or James) on the same page.

This is a mammoth task but the indexes are currently free to view at ancestry.

hi there slippers , i see your ancestor had a sister who married a lukies, if i were you i would check the census records from 1850's onwards for , gunwalloe, st helston's area of cornwall as those lukies along with my lot, the other clan , the lukeis were from there & my lot aren't related, you may find a hungarian link or that lukies is a surname with almost no info to it

Good Morning
Seeing as you are having trouble finding her marriage couldn't you try looking at baptisms and discounting them. There are no marriages on Freebmd of william andrews to a Maria James/Clark(e) 1851 - 1861.
But there is a baptism Leamington Priors 9.1.1831 Maria to William and Mary Hannah James leamington cook.
In 1841 there is a Maria James 10 female servant in Warwick(Sun St?) to Henry Paxford 55 grocer and his wife Mary 50,son James 20.
The only other Maria James baptised on Familysearch or Ancestry 1828-1834 is at Sutton coldfield which doesn't fit the Coventry/Warwick area.

Ps there is a marriage 5.12.1832 William James widower to a Hannah Clark at Kenilworth which might suggest other possibilities for Maria's name change.
