Up until the latter half of the 1800s coalmining was pretty much an industry that went unrecorded. Mines at that time were either small affairs whereby locals would mine coal near the surface via shallow drifts or slightly more organised affairs run by the landed gentry who saw it as a bonus to thier estate. Many mines were not even listed, while of those that may have had some reference may have had changes of ownership and therefore possible name changes.
The first list I can find on mines in lanarkshire is dated 1869, Here is the link
