Advice needed 1841 census please - completed

Hi all

In September 2005 (when I first discovered this great site) I put on this post -

 I live in Australia and would really appreciate help. I am seeking details of Robert McCulloch and wife Janet McCulloch maiden surname Donald ( also shown as Jessie McDonald)

Their children born Glasgow - Ann born 12 Aug1822 married James Anderson in December 1841
Robert born 7 Dec1824 migrated to Australia 1853
Janet/Jessie born 9 Sept 1827.

I received a huge amount of help from this and subsequently am now in contact with a direct descendant of Ann, plus all the children were found for me in 1851 census.( No sign of the parents though -perhaps they had died?)

Falkyrn checked the 1841 census indices for me and could not find the family on it, only another family with parents Robert and Jane in Lauriston who were not mine.

Sorry for waffling on, but I needed to fill you in with what has been done so far.

Now to finally get to my question - 
I have recently been told that Scotlands people now has the 1841 census online. Is it worth my while to subscribe to try to find the family in 1841, or has the searching by Rootschatters on my behalf last year proven that they are not included in 1841 census?

Scotlands people is not a subscription site it costs £6 about 15 Au dollars for 30 credits.
It is free to search but looking at the results of the search costs 1 credit and then to look at the actual extract costs 5 credits

For example .... using the free search facility shows 21 entries for Robert McCulloch in Glasgow City but zero for Janet McCulloch

While viewing you can actually download and save the certificate to your computer

Don't forget that Freecen has some 1841 census info available from  http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

The coverage isn't as extensive as Scotland's People and it can be checked at  http://freecen.rootsweb.com/coverage-LKS.html  or   http://members.aol.com/margsi/Glasgow1841.htm  or  http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~scotnet/FreeCEN/LKS  To use Freecen you really need to know the parish.

I found these possible matches on Freecen. Bear in mind that ages over 15 were rounded down;

Robert McCulloch, age 15, Cabinet maker apprentice, Barony parish, living with Stewart family

Robert McCulloch, age 40, Wine merchant, Gorbals parish, living with Jane, age 35, Mary (16), Janet (15), Robert (10), John (7), Jane (4), Euphemia (2) & 2 servants

Ann McCulloch, age 15, Barony parish, living with Andrew family

Thank you both for your replies.

I have been constantly checking Freecen, to no avail for the whole family together. You have now started me thinking "outside the square". Apart from the Ann and Robert living with another family, I have just found a Janet aged 10 also living with another family. All of these in Barony.

I had previously thought that their parents Robert and Janet McCulloch may have died prior to 1851 census, but maybe they had both died prior to 1841?

Robert's occupation here in Oz was a wood turner and joiner, so this could be him in 1841.

As you suggested, I just did a search on Scotlandspeople, and only one entry for a Robert showed up in Barony - no entries for Ann or Janet within the age ranges (taking into account the 5 year deduction). Mind you, I am not too proficient with that site.

Perhaps if I order in the LDS film for the OPR for Ann's marriage in december 1841, it may show if her father was deceased.

So, thank again. Eventually this brick wall must be broken down, especially with all the records now becoming available.
I often think how wonderful it would be to be able to physically go to the various record depositories to search, rather than from over here in Oz.

Probably not - this is pre statutory registration and in Scotland there was no set form to use for marriages.  Parents' names were not shown.

The OPR records for marriages pre-statutory registration were a pretty mixed bag ... I have one where all it says of the bride was that she was of this parish and only gives the grooms name ... but another was a gem of a find.
Unfortunately at the prices charged it is a rather expensive "lucky dip"

New to this, and notice you're from Oz.
Are you aware in NSW you can visit your local library and go on the net to view Ancestry. (library ed.), for free and download info as well. Either print it off or take your flash drive. All census so far released.1841...1901.
It costs nothing to join your library, it's in your council rates.

Welcome to Rootschat. I am sure you will find this site very helpful in your research. Rootschatters go out of their way to help each other.

I live in Victoria and we also have free access to ancestry.com in our public libraries, however I now have purchased a subscription to ancestry at home because I found it so useful.

 I initially put this post on in May 2006 when access to ancestry was not freely available, but I really appreciate your suggestion.
