London County Asylum, Dartford, Kent.
« on: Thursday 04 May 06 17:36 BST (UK) »
I have just found a family member in the 1901 census in London County Asylum, The Heath, Dartford Kent. Does anyone know the intake area for this asylum? Could she have been sent there from Acton in London?

This lady, (Kate) Emma Eatwell, I was told had epilepsy would this be a reason to lock her up in this asylum and are the records for this place held anywhere??

Thank you

Jacky

Have you tried the London Metropolitan Archives?   They seem to hold lots of records from hospitals/asylums.

I remember this place which was still open in the 60's and opposite our primary school (Maypole).  The name was Bexley Hospital and the intake certainly came from all over the country at that time and all sorts of illnesses including epilepsy.  So very possible that your relative was  in there.  I think there may be a website for the friends of Bexley Hospital if you want to google for it.

Bexley Hospital has totally gone now appart from the old chapel and the gate house. It is a very expensive housing estate now. Has been there for about 5 years. They literally moved the last of the patients out and knocked it down.

Not really relevant more social history really.
