my gt granfather Robert Henry Dawson moved/emmigrated to America from Manchester about the 1890s but came back before 1901, thats the year my grandmother was born in Manchester, her older brother james had been born in america (his nickname was yank) apparently my grandad  went to America to work in some kind of logging business, conected with his or his wifes family, does anyone know which areas of America this logging/timber trade was, any kind of info would be a help

There are too many areas in the US that participate in the logging business to be able to help here.

Do you know where James was born...what state?  It may be possible to look for him and his father on the 1900 census, if he was still there.

Hi grub unfortunatly I can't find anyone in the family who even knew about this, my grandmother was the only one who talked about it and she is no longer with us. do you think it would be possible to find James's birth in America without knowing the area or is that too difficult, I'm only just getting my head round searching in this country

I'm sorry to say that we are stuck on his birth at this moment.

There MAY be a possibility to find Robert Henry on a passenger list which would give his destination.

Do you know his wife's name and their ages?  If he came through New York he may be on the Ellis Island site
(http://www.ellisisland.org) which has lists from 1892 to 1924.
