Pesketts from Sussex
« on: Wednesday 03 May 06 02:44 BST (UK) »
H i all

l am hoping for some help.

My family comes from
Wisborough Green/Billinghurst/Arundel in Sussex before moving to Australia.

My GGGFather was christened in 1773 in wisborough green (this info from the Latter Day Saint IGI)

It has his father listed as Richard.

I am hoping someone can help me with the marriage of his parents.

Also his marriage as well. He had a son Peter in Adversane.

I beleive l found Richard and family in the Sussex poor law records it has his wife as Ann together with his children (including Peter)

thanks in advance

Hi Zimmerman,
You've failed to tell us who your 2x great grandfather was..name please  ;)  There is only one marriage of  a Richard Peskett in Sussex to an Ann,

West Chiltington, West Sussex,    8 Jan 1799:
 Richard PESKETT
 Ann SNASHFOLD, botp (B)
Witness wit; Ric.P.; My.P.  That would be Richard Peskett & Mary Peskett

This date is too late according to the baptism of your 2x great grandfather in 1773.
What about a date for the Poor law information?

His name is Richard.

The marriage you found, l had found that one on the IGI am trying to confirm whether it is or isn't.

The poor law records dates are

West Sussex Poor Law Records

19-07-1800

Richard       from billinghurst
Anne (spouse)
Samson (son)

06-01-1816

richard           from Billinghurst
anne   (spouse)
richard (child)
george     ~
hannah     ~
james       ~
peter        ~  (my descendent)
luke          ~

Also found on the database

02-04-1775

Richard                               from Pulborough
and Mary (spouse) Pesket

Possibly my Richards parents ?

but if so why would he be recorded if christened in 1773?

Hi Zimmerman,
I would think this is the marriage of Richard senior.

Billingshurst, West Sussex,   10 Oct 1771:
 Richard PESKETT
 Mary GOATCHER
 Witness wit: Wm.PUTTOCK; Rd. BRIGGS

Making it very likely that they are the parents of your Richard junior as he was born 1773 (hopefully that IGI information was an extracted record?)

The marriage of Richard & Ann is from the Sussex Marriage Index so take it as confirmed.
I don't know where young Richard would have been on that 1775 Removal Order, perhaps they left him with relatives?

Hi Zimmerman,
I checked the A2A site for those settlements.  Checking the IGI there are several children attributed to a Richard & Mary Peskett, as well as your Richard 1773,

Elizabeth 1774, Wisborough Green
sarah       1775        ditto
Mary         1777        Billingshurst
Alice          1785           ditto
Rebecca    1792           ditto

I've only found one possibility for Richard senior on the IGI,
Richard Peascod  bap. 1741 Lodsworth s/o John

Looking at the distribution map on the marriage index for the name of Peskett there is a high density of marriages on the western borders with Hampshire & looks like the name is slowly moving east & north.  Also looks like the name started out as PESCOD with variants on the spelling.

It would be a good idea to try & find a burial for Richard senior in the hope it might give an age giving you a possible dob.  Billingshurst would be a good place to start.  Monumental inscriptions can help if they've done a survey of the churchyard.
The West Sussex Records Centre might be able to help as could the Sussex Family History Group, but they seem to have more information for east Sussex rather than West.  Try a Google search to see if there is a local Billingshurst history society.
