can anyone sort this mess out please!!!
« on: Monday 01 May 06 12:58 BST (UK) »
trying to find a birth cert for a charles william widdowson/ lupton/ shelly born around 1895/6 he was 5yrs old on the 1901 census which stated hull as his birth place. His mother was hannah widdowson, she had him before she married william lupton in 1900,  charles w went into the army as widdowson, got married as widdowson but on just recieving hannah's death cert he was down as chas w shelly, son, she died in 1914 so he would have been around 18yrs then. I have searched the indexes but found no cw shelley only in croyden in 1897. C W son who is now dead could never find a birth cert for him so when we got the cert we thought our prayers had been answered, but no nothing, if anyone could help or point us in the right direction i would be very grateful.

Hi Moira,

Could she possibly have been married before and been a little economical with the truth when she married William Lupton?  Also is the Shelly definitely Shelly and not Kelly on the death certificate?  The reason I ask is that there was a possible marriage of a Hannah Widdowson to a James Kelley in 1890 registered Goole.  On the 1891 census is a Hannah Kelly, a married visitor in Goole who was born Keadby which is where I believe your Hannah was born.

All supposition, but I thought it may be worth mentioning.

Regards,
Mo

Hi there,

I have come to you in a round about way - you recently put a post up to offer to do look-ups in the Matlock record office.  That post doesn't have a reply button, and the moderator put a message up to put your offer elsewhere, which I can't find....so here I am via a general search.

I was wondering if you could do a look up for me on one of your visits.  I am looking for confirmation of the birth and baptism of an Elizabeth Varney who (on a family tree that I have) was born apparently on 29th Oct 1825, and Christened on8th Oct 1826 in Belper to a Samuel Varney and wife Ann (Jackson).

Her siblings were Woodhouse Varney Christened 16 Jan 1824, Hannah Christened 26 Sept 1822, and Martha Christened 25th Dec 1821 and died 16th Jan1824. All in Belper.  If there is any other information surrounding these children (or any children I have missed) or their actual birth dates this would be of interest too.

Many thanks

Ruthy

Hello Moira,

There is a birth registered for a Charles William Skelly - March Qtr 1896 Hull Vol 9d Page 291

I can't see a death or an entry in the 1901 for this person - could Shelly actually be Skelly?

Supposition again but you never know ???

Kind regards,

Karen  :)

This is for Ruthy.........

I do not have any of my notes with me at the moment BUT I believe Woodhouse Varney somehow connects to into my family tree as well....... I have a Mary Varney, born about 1846 in Belper. I think in my lost notes somewhere that she traces back to Woodhouse (name seems to ring bells) although I am not sure how - she must have been a daughter of one of his sons. Mary Varney married Jeremiah Ratcliffe on December 25, 1865 in Belper Derbyshire. Their daughter Elizabeth Ellen, born about 1867 married December 26, 1886 in Belper to Henry Gill. Henry & Elizabeth Gill were my Great Grandparents.

Hi
I seem to have missed missed your reply, but thanks for this info - it seems to fit mine.  I have been slowly establishing the Varney research and I have discovered a Mary Varney in my tree who was born to a son of Woodhouse Varney.  The son in question was Joseph who was the youngest son of Woodhouse and Elizabeth Varney of Belper, (he was born in 1814). I have no other info for Mary although it could very well be her.  In which case my direct line continues from her brother Samuel who was born in 1841. Do let me know if I can help with any further info – very exciting to find a link albeit a distant one ☺

Hi Ruthy

Just found your message about the Varney's. Our Mary was indeed the daughter of Joseph Varney & Hannah Gregory. And, by the censuses, Joseph's age would match the 1814 date for the son of Woodhouse Varney. Perfect - takes me back another step in the family history.... :)
