David, You mentioned earlier that "Joseph's father" died in 1872. Where does this come from, as if it is true: to confirm the 1881 household I need to be looking for a widow, with Joseph as a son.

It was me that went off on the wrong trail.

I am going to go one generation at a time - i.e. carefully!

What makes it awkward is that the Devon records are considerably harder to access than those in Cornwall.

We could do with the birth certificate for Joseph, but I will see what I can do.

This goes back to Joseph's birth for starters: (Now I will make myself some dinner!)

For any possible newspaper pictures and announcements about Joseph and Hannah and any of their children, you would need to go to the Central Library at Drake Circus - Local Studies Dept.

The Family History Dept has all the same parish records that the Plymouth Records Office do. The difference being that you can get copy certificates from the PRO. If you want to go into the PRO as well, treat yourself to a birth certificate for Joseph, and marriage certificates for Joseph and Elizabeth.

The first thing that you can check in the Central Library at Drake Circus is the actual date of Joseph Penrose's birth in the East Stonehouse parish records.

This will be a good starter for you to use to get to know what resources they have, and the staff are trained to show you what you can get out of the resources available, and how to use each to verify each other.

Parish burial records are also there, which aren't online because so few people want to transcribe anything negative.
