WILLIAM DODSWORTH, 1837

If anyone has lost a William DODSWORTH who may be of similar age to this one...... please let me know!  I have no real certainty of the age of my gt.grandfather who didn't marry gt.grandma!  He fathered two children in New Zealand in 1890 and 1892, (my Nana) and appeared on an electoral roll here in 1897....... then.......... that's it.... I can't find him after that, (and have searched NZ and Australain records to no avail).  So I have no death record to confirm an age. gt.grandma was born in 1850, and firstly married a man many years her senior, so a chap ten years older would have been a "toy-boy" in comparison!!! <vbg> 

I "think" he may have arrived in Victoria, Australia, and then came onto NZ during the gold rushes of both countries, (1870s) but neither shipping record gives more than an age commensurate with a birthdate of 1840, and a birthplace of England.

It is possible, that he is the William DODSWORTH born to Henry in York in 1838, as the daughter of Henry did emigrate to NZ, but no family research by relatives of that family has found anything on William beyond his baptism.

My only other "clue" is that gt.grandma had a tendency towards strong naming patterns in her brood of six children.  Her son to William was named Alfred, but it just may have been fashionable by then.  (Oddly she had a step-son named that, but I think there was a big rift in that family, and highly doubt he'd be the name-sake!)

Finally, although William on "Arawata" was a miner (gold, probably), my gt.grandfather was farming on a small land-holding in the 1890s. That's not an unusual move for emigrants to the colonies, and possibly he had a rural upbringing, but was struck by gold-fever!

Would this William Dodsworth be the son of John and Ann (Wright) who were married in Bedale in1829 ?

We are researching William's brother George (b 1841).

Yes, we are researching the same line, though I have'nt got any further back as yet.
William moved further North, to Co Durham, as did his brothers, I think.

We've gathered some info on William from the 1841,1861-1891 censuses.  We know his wife was Hannah - do you know if her maiden name was BARR ?

If so can you explain where the TEMPLE connection came from (ie first son named John Temple DODSWORTH) ?

William Dodsworth married Hannah Temple, born 1840 in East Hetton (now Coxhoe), daughter of James Temple and Isabella Riddell.
I have the marriage certificate, but everything is packed away at the moment, due to re-decorating.
They were married on 29 May 1863 in Kelloe. William died of apoplexy on a visit to his son's home at West Cornforth on 27/04/1897.

helo came across your dodsworth query by chance.  I have a John Dodsworth born abt 1804 Yorkshire.  I believ that his wife was called hannah, they had about five children around the helperby/brafferton area, one including ann dodswoth born 1846.  she later went onto marry an alfred calvert. if you recognise these names please get in touch.

hello my gg grandmother was ann dodsworth who was born abt 1846 in yorkshire.  her father was a john dodsworth and ann had I believe a brother called george.  Im wondering if we are connected.  Ann went onto marry an alfred calvert and also moved up to county durham
