Cheetham Family , Dublin ...my brick wall !!
« on: Saturday 29 April 06 14:14 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone........

If any one could help , in any way , I would be very grateful .

I am looking for ANY information , about my husbands great grandfather . RICHARD CHEETHAM , born C1853 in Lancashire / Cheshire  . He was a Photographer / Artist  . Family tradition has it , that he was a Court Photographer , in England , but liked a bit of the hard stuff , and was banished .....He was most certainly , a wonderful photographer , we have some of his works .

We know he was married , to Caroline Emily Crouch , born Binfield , Berkshire , C1853 at Liverpool , in 1873 .....from there , we have no trace ......they had several children in Dublin , notably , Augustus Alexander Cheetham , born September 1886 .
my husbands grandfather , who also  became a photographer

They returned to England , we think about 1905 .

Can anyone help us ?? The 1901 census info would be wonderful .

Many thanks

JeannieR

Hi Audrey.......

And thank you so much for looking !!

After I read your reply , I spent quite a while looking for the Cheethams.....and found the in Liverpool !!

The enumerator , had written their name as Cheetham Richard , not Richard Cheetham !!  It is definitely my husbands family . (They would have to be awkward )

There is great elation around at the moment , because they just disappeared after their marriage in 1873 , but having found this info , I have managed to get back , this weekend ,to the late 1700's.........

Thank you once again
Jeannie

Hello
I am new to rootschat and  found your posting (from 4 years ago) about Richard Cheetham. I have been researching this family for some time now. He is my huabands great grandfather and I managed to get all of the information from Ireland (births of children etc) but drew a blank then. Your post about the 1901 census proved very useful. My husbands grandfather was also called richard and was a photographer in liverpool where he married for the second time (previous marriage in Dublin in 1896). He then becameMorris Richards (dont know why) and his photographic artists studio was called Carlton studio in Garston, Liverpool. I have been told that he was known in the area as Dickie twice, maybe because of the two names or two marriages ? I found a very interesting article about Caroline Crouch's brother but you may already have this. I am currently researching Richard Cheethams parents and have some info about them.
Enjoying this research as they were an interesting lot!

My Goodness !!

Since I posted that question, I have done a lot od research, and have quite a lot of info too.....

Uncle Dickie Twice, married Clara Mangin , and had quite a few children . I did not know he had been married twice .I have photographs, taken by great grandad, and we are in touch with a grandaughter of Richard, who is now 86, and remembers him well.......

I know about Caroline Crouch's brother. Did you know that Fiona Bruce is descended from him ? She has the Crouch nose ! I have a beautiful photograph of Caroline and also one of Betsy....

I am so excited......

Which of Dickie twices children, is your husband descended from ?
Names I have are...
Kathleen 1902 / Morris 1903 / Doris / 1904 / Marjorie 1906 / Edward 1907 / Evelyn 1910 Gordon 1911 / Iris and Shelagh

I have to agree difficult family (with the name change ) to research, but I have them back to the 1780's in Derbyshire.......

Watch this space , will change my profile picture to Great grandad

Me Again....

Still excited too.

Uncle Dickie, was called Dickie Twice, because he was born as Richard Morris Cheetham. The family (all of them ) changed their name from from Cheetham to Richards , so he would have been Richard Richards....he took his middle name , Morris as his christian name.

Morris was the surname of Betsy , before she married Edward Crouch ....

Would you like my email address ?

New members usually need 2/3 posts before using PM (personal message) System so if brennan1 makes one more post you can send your email address and other personal/recent family details that aren't allowed to be posted here by PM.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hello.....

I am trying to cook our evening meal, but I can't concentrate on it !

My husbands grandfather was Augustus Alexander Cheetham (Richards ) He too , was a eminent photographer, as was HIS son , Leslie Alexander Cheetham (Richards )

We have a wonderful portrait of Great Grandfather Richard Cheetham, taken at the studio in Garston, by Uncle Dickie Twice......

The photograph I have just put as my profile , was taken on their wedding day . Wasn't great grandma beautiful ? Richard and Caroline . died within a couple of weeks of each other, in 1933.

Not very good technically, but I will try to send you photographs in a email, but until you reply to this, will not be able to PM you

Kindest regards

JeannieR
