hello again
The photograph is wonderful. Lovely to be able to show my husband his great grandmother and my children their great great grandmother. Unfortunately we do not have any of the very old photos. Although I have details of my husbands mothers (evelyn maud) family members, I had not realised that there was a Gordon until your post. We now know that is why he (my husband) is called Gordon. His mother married an Aspinal and I am also researching this family along with my own ancesters.
Thank you again

Dear Brennan1 and JeannieR

Just to introduce myself.   I have already contacted Jeannie R.   I am the grandchild of Evelyne Maude Cheetham who married Edwin Winterson.     My parents were Richard Chastel and Muriel Rabbage.   Would love your research on Richard Morris Cheetham, father of my and your grandparents.

Think I also met your parents at my Grand house.... a long long time ago.

Nice to hear we are not alone!

Hello Brennen1,

Thank you for your reply.   I find this all very odd as I fell upon RootsChat by pure chance and was not even researching relatives.

However, firstly, I have in my possession some birth and interment certificates of your direct uncles.  Would you like them?  An interment certificate for DONALD V CHETHAM, aged 23 months, 1915; EDWARD JOHN MONTROSE CHEETHAM, 29 March 1900;  RICHARD MORRIS MONTROSE CHEETHAM, aged 10 years, 1913.   I also have the birth certificate of Richard Morris.   I have a beautifully written grave Certificate of Proprietor belonging to your Grandfather for grave 481 in St James's Cemetry.

My Gran Evelyne Maude (Cissie), must have been very close to her brother Richard as they lived near one another.  I see that your mother was named after her also.  Did you ever go to their house in Cressington Park?  I have such strong memories of that house.  We all did.

I am really intrigued by the parents of Richard Cheetham.   Was there really a Jewish strain there and from where would they have originated ?  Eastern Europe   If you have any more details on all of this I would be very interested.

Let me know if you would like these certificates.

Many thanks, and best regards,

Dottyc.

Hi Dotty

I've been emailing Jeannie as I've been searching for the family of a Sgt Ronald Richards who died along with my uncle on a raid over Hamburg in 1942. Its been extremely difficult to trace them until the other day when I similtaneaously had an email from someone who I believe maybe be related to you all and also found Jeannie's post about a Roland Richards at the same time.

I've found several deed poll records for 5 members of the family changing their name from Cheetham to Richards and I couldn't understand why they might do this and then this morning it occurred to me that maybe they were Jewish and given the situation in Europe in 1934 felt very vulnerable and decided to change their name.

I have just emailed the Manchester jewish museum to see if they can confirm whether Cheetham is a Jewish name and would love to know any more details you might know that would help me solve the riddle.

Many thanks
Nicola

Also I don't know if they're related to your branch of the family but I found some details about some indentures and bankruptcies for Cheethams in the 1800s:

John Cheetham 1826 Sheffield

John Cheetham 1843 Rochdale

James Cheetham & John Taylor Cheetham  1863

Elkanah Howard Cheetham & Samuel Howard Cheetham 1880 - does this suggest that there might be a Jewish branch, as suggested by the previous post and which might explain the name change on 1934?

Hello Nicola,

I am having to run out of the house and so cant quite concentrate on all of your news.   I cant wait to get back though.   I am in Florida at the moment, but live in Switzerland.  My daughter lives in London though.   You sound a very interesting person.  Must fly and thanks.

Dotty C.   I have been in contact with Jeannie for some time and she is a mind of inforations.  And yes my forefathers were rather prolific!!!!

Hello Nicola,

We have a lovely photo of Roland Cheetham/Richards if you would like it.   I am leaving tomorrow morning for about 12 days but if you would like more details I will happily send them to you upon my return.   The Cheetham family were a very interesting lot!

Very nice meeting you even though you are not family.

Best regards,  Dotty C.

Hello again,

I will fish it out when I get back.   I assume Roland is the same person who died in  your father's plane.

I am actually off to the Galapagos and have n't packed yet.   This family tree business fascinates me.

Best wishes,

Dotty C
