I have a William John Pedan/ Paden married an Ellen scanlon in Newtownards in the early1880s he remarried in 1890 and was registered as a widower on this second marriage. I was wondering if anyone had any info on whether there were any Children to this first marriage or about the death of Ellen?

Have you tried some of the possibles below
Ulster Historical Foundation ie www.ancestryireland.co.uk/ If you use their search system, you will get a report which starts with Birth records for Antrim and Down,  then Marriage records for Antrim and Down , then Irish ancestors being researched (members interests), then Distribution of Surnames in Ulster ( 9 counties) in the mid-1800’s [ie Mathesons Database] , then Ulster Historical Foundation Research Files  and so on. You can look up say the births and you will get first names and a year and a county, only then do you have to pay to view the entry to get any more detail. In the marriage section. I have learnt to match the dates shown for husband and spouse, thus reducing the possible marriage dates, nevertheless you then need to check it out. Members interests could contain your family being researched already.

The UHF has a sister website accessible ‘ History from Headstones’ here is a great first line of knowledge, you search by county and surname, again at some point you you have to pay to view the entry to get any more detail. It’s a little bit irritating when one knows they have published many in the series edited by  Richard Clarke .  anyway back to the UHF

Have you exhausted the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who sponsor the website www.familysearch.com.  There is much to learn as to how to use it to its maximum. You can search for just the records for a surname in Ireland. The missing search element for you is the place associated. Its library catalogue and CD collections are worth investigating. I have not found errors myself, but other genealogists say it isnt 100% accurate and one needs to check the information at source.[As one should do anyway]

Hi Jim and thank you for taking the time to type all that out.
Now the Ellen Scanlan I'm looking for is the one born Antrim 1865 and i think the marriage was the one you have listed as J Paden 1881 Down
I was in the Ulster Historical society office and found marriages for William John Paden the first was to Ellen Scanlon and the second was in 1890 to a Margaret Thompson he was listed as a widower on the marriage cert.
Now on his childrens birth certs the first child is born 1892 mother Margaret Thompson the 3rd child was born 1896 and the mother is Margaret Clotworthy...........  so where did Margaret Thompson go??

Now in the Covenant
William J Paden is at 97 Movilla Street as is his daughter to Margaret Clotworthy, Annie....... But who is the Maggie Paden in 42 Wallaces street? is it Margaret Thompson?

And why did he marry Ellen Scanlon a Catholic from Belfast and only use John Paden and not his full name William John.
I think i need to look for her death between their marriage in 1881 and his second Marriage in 1890.

OK Folks i need to update this, Now William John Paden married Ellen Scanlan in Newtownards in 1886 and he did use his full name.
He was a widower in 1890 when he married Margaret Thompson

  Margaret  Thompson was born in Jan 1872 and the person who registered her birth was an Ann Clotworthy  who was present at the birth in Wallaces Street Newtownards mother was a Mary Hamilton no Father named on birth cert.

Margaret Thompson's and William Johns First born was in 1892.
 
The Third Born was 1896 and the Mother is named on the cert as A Margaret Clotworthy (Whos grand Daughter found an Envolope with her grandmothers birthdate as being as being Born in June 1874 wrote on the back), so that rules out Margaret Thompson and Margaret Clotworthy as being the same person and anyway why would she change her maiden name?

the second born was in 1894 ive yet to locate his birth cert to see which Margaret is named as his mother

And the last born was in 1907 Margaret Clotworthy named as mother

So where did Margaret Thompson go? and who was the Maggie Paden in Wallace's street in 1912 (the street Margaret Thompson was born in and where Annie Clotworthy was present at the birth in1872)
I still havent found a marriage cert for William John and Margaret Clotworthy.
Can any one give me a helping hand here any ideas? anything?

Seems the census might help. The Irish Times says "Full government censuses were taken of the whole island.  This means that the earliest surviving comprehensive returns are for 1901 and 1911. Because of this, the normal rule that census returns should not be available to the public for 100 years has been suspended in the Republic of Ireland, and the original returns can be consulted in the National Archives.   A full microfilm copy of the 1901 census is available at the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Indexes, published or database, are available for the 1901 returns of some counties; these are noted under the relevant county. Copies of the 1901 returns for the six counties now in Northern Ireland are available at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland." 

I now live in England and its not convenient to use the LDS centre, I have been told access to the 1911 is available in NI Libraries,so I hope someone living there will help solve everything, Good luck, Jim
