School Records - Birmingham
« on: Tuesday 25 April 06 21:46 BST (UK) »
Hello,

In 1915 my gr-grandmother, Elizabeth Stanley was living at 3 Back, 39 Barker Street, Ladywood.  My grandfather's older siblings must have been in school.  His sister, Elizabeth, born 1905, William (Mick) born 1908, Lillian (Pat) born 1912 and my grandfather born 1914.

In 1916 she was living at 11 Wellington Place, Hospital Street. They were Roman Catholic.

Any idea of what school they may have attended and if the records would be available?

Also, my gr-gr grandfather may have went to St. Chad's RC in Birmingham, any idea where those records might be?

Thanks,
Karen

Hello Karen
St.Chad's school is in Hospital st.
 http://www.stchadscathedral.org.uk/school.php
The records may be at the Cathedral archives in Shadwell st. you can view them by appointment only.I would email the school email: bonita.ewins@st-chads.bham.sch.uk    and ask them. They may also be at the Birmingham Central Library who hold many such records.

Hi Jim,

Thank you very much for the link.   As I live in Ontario, Canada I am unable to go and look myself, oh sure I would love to  :) , I will send off an email and see what happens.

Looking at previous marriage certificates of my family I have quite a few that we married in St. Chad's.

When I ever get to Birmingham, I think that will be one of my first stops.

Hi Karen
Just a piece of useless info. but I have an ancestor who sang in the choir at St.Chad's in late 19c. and whose daughter married the Sacristan of the Cathedral.i wonder if he sang at their weddings?

Hi ,

I think that is great useless info.  I'm sure that at one point our ancestors were in the Chuch at the same time together.

It's interesting when you find "personal" things about their lives, such as my gr-gr-grandfather, John Franklin I believed worked at Ralph Martindale as a matchet mounter and my gr-grandmother worked for a place called Morewood?  I have a ashtray of hers stamped on the bottom it's a fish, ugly looking thing, but apparently she smoked liked a chimney and my father remembers as a boy her always having that ashtray on the kitchen table.  Useles info to some people, but I treasure the ashtray now that my father gave it to me.  :)

Ohh, this is getting interesting.  I'll have to check for a Samuel Ball.

My gr-grandmother was Elizabeth Ball in 1904 she lived at 2 Back 333 Summer Lane, according to her 1st son's birth certificate.

Hi Karen

My father was born the same year (1915) in Ladywood, he and his siblings (between 1910-1918) went to the Oratory R.C. School.

http://www.birminghamdiocese.org.uk/diocesan_parish_display.asp?parishid=165

Apparently the story goes that the weren't even Roman Catholics, it had room for them where as the C of E schools didn't.

Hope this helps
Sheila
