Workhouse Lanchester 1850
« on: Tuesday 25 April 06 09:56 BST (UK) »
I have a birth certificate of a family member who was born in Workhouse Lanchester County of Durham. Can anyone tell me where that was and if I can find any info/pictures of the place back 1850.

I am unsure how long the mother was there for, cant find her on the 1851 census.

Thanks, Ele.

Hi ele

Googling produces lots of results, but this one is always a good bet for workhouses :

and this

If you are able, it is often fascinating to see the workhouse records as they can be very helpful in your research.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Thanks Arranroots,

Couldnt seem to find on Durham online where they would keep the workhouse records. I suppose you have to go in and search yourself. Do you know if they do look ups for you? Might have to contact them I think and ask..

Thanks again, Ele

Hi ele

Durham seem to lack a working website for their Record Office!

I am not familiar with the area, but the workhouse site seems to suggest that only a few records survive.  You might be lucky if someone can tell you how to contact them!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

If anyone knows of a working URL for Durham, please let us know!

I have been searching the Lanchester Workhouse and found a long list of names by looking at the Census1881....the workhouse is in the main street and a long way thro' the census....I think one side of the road was completed then out into the countryside before returning to complete the rest.
