Ok am stuck, I AGAIN cant find anything on Ancestry.

Details of that family in 1901
14 Gough St, Middlesbrough
John W Anderson   Head   31      Down Holme, Yorks   Worker
Eliza Anderson   Wife   31      Stapenhill, Derby   Undefined
Elsie Anderson   Daughter   5      Middlesbrough   Undefined
Norman M Anderson   Son   2      Middlesbrough   Undefined

Elsie is one of the ladies above. Gladys was either not counted on that census or was born after that census was taken

View Record Gladys Anderson 1896 Jan-Feb-Mar    Middlesbrough (1875-1968)  Co. Durham, North Riding Of Yorkshire
View Record Gladys Anderson 1902 Oct-Nov-Dec    Durham (1837-1938)  Co. Durham
View Record Gladys Anderson 1903 Jul-Aug-Sep    South Shields  Co. Durham, Tyne And Wear

I'll have to ask my mothers aunt about her!
So far ..... <br />Anderson - Yorkshire   Bell - Durham   Best - Yorkshire/Durham   Gidney - Norfolk/Durham   Hare - Lincolnshire/Durham   Loads - Norfolk   Lodge - Northumberland   Reeve - Norfolk   Sloan - Durham   Thompson - Blakeney & Northumberland   White - Durham

I have had a very good look at both photos with the aid of a 'glass' and I think you will find they arre the same person - the photos were probably taken some time apart, and that explains the difference in the eyebrows.  If you look at the bridge of the nose, you will see a small 'bump' about 1/2" below the eyebrow. This could have been a break but would hardly be genetic.

Hi,
I agree with Ticknall , I also  think it is the same person taken at different times in their life.

The picture on the left (or top) looks older by a couple of years. Eyebrows change - she probably started plucking them when she got older as a lot of women do.  Nose change - the younger woman has her head/face slightly  tilted upward - while the older one is looking at  the camera at a very level postion. I don't think a nose  would look  exactly the same in two  photos if the heads are in a different angle as these photos are . It's very hard to tell if it's the same person or not the same person when they are taken at different angles. I never look the same person in a lot of my own photos myself.

Regarding the "mother" and "aunty Gladys" wording under the pictures , do you know if the album changed hands in the family? Say for instance the album was not originally your grandmother's album but it was her first cousins album which later got passed onto your grandmother for some reason, maybe her first cousin died so she inherited her album  -And then your grandmother added photos to it too.
Is the handwriting  on both pictures written in the same style as each other, written by the same person? If not it may explain why one photo says aunty and the other says mother.  It still doesn't explain why she is  called Gladys though of course, if you can't find a sister of your grandmother's mum  with the name Gladys  -   unless it's your grandmother's first cousin's (on your grandmothers father's side ) mum and the first cousin  wrote  the word mother - then on the other photo your grandmother wrote "aunty". Maybe check your grandmother's father's family too to see if her father had a sister called Gladys. Just some totally wild thoughts for you.

Another thought;  Is the wording written on the pages of the album or the photo's themselves? If it's on the pages, perhaps the photo's have been taken out of the album at some point in time and then  put back in their wrong position.

If It's not the same person, they almost look like identical twins to me. They look so very, very alike to me

 :)

Considering that eyebrow plucking really took off around 1912-1914 i think if it was the same person she would of already had her eyebrows plucked in what some seem to think is the earlier photo.A single woman is more likely to make the effort! They look very similar but when you look at the photos together, as i have said before, there are definite differences. A lot of young women looked similar then as style dictated. There are lots of opinions on this so i dont think there is a definite answer.

I'm almost certain it was my Grandma who made the album and my mam spoke to her aunt (my grandma's sister today.

Auntie Gladys (married to Uncle Steve) is my Great Grandmothers cousin. Which doesn't help matters at all.

My Great Grandmother is Elsie Anderson she had brothers Norman b1899 and Harryb1901 and sister Doris b1903.
