The Deepings etc. and other parts of south Holland will have Peterborough as the post town historically.Early censuses probably contained some of these villages with Peterborough. Even today. Boston Lincs has PE21 postcodes and is 30 miles from Peterborough. At least the 1974 local government reorganization tidied things up for administrative purposes, though if Peterborough continues to grow the same thing may happen again.

When I was a bit younger if you drove through Peterborough, just before you got out of the city going north was a sign saying Welcome to Lincolnshire ??? ???

The only Lincs parish in Peterborough District was Crowland http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/peterborough.html

Peterborough was part of Northamptonshire until 1888.
It then became an independant administrative county known as 'Soke of Peterborough'
As from 1965 it merged with Huntingdonshire to be county of H & P
It is now, as from 1974, along with Hunts, contained in Cambridgeshire.

that being said, on Ancestry every census 1851 - 1901, Peterborough is in County of Northamptonshire.

Yahoo!!   ;D

I didn't know Peterborough used to be a part of Northamptonshire.  I just ordered the 1851 birth certificate of my paternal great great grandfather (the nice lady on the telephone confirmed the parents names were correct), only been looking for it for 5 years since I started my tree.  Thanks for sharing that information, you've made my day.

The registers are held at Peterborough register office, although listed under Northamptonshire index on freeBMD.
