In 1871, Alice is living at (what appears to be) "Fenen Cottages", Rye St.
A few doors away at "Four Throws" is the George & Dragon Inn!

Hope this helps
Dave

Many thanks for the quick response and input. As a result . . . :

Address 1
I am leaning to Fenix because what I now consider to definitely be a dot over the lowercase “i” is as similar and as misplaced as the dot over the “i” in the word “Twentieth”. Also, Fenix makes for a phonetic spelling of Phoenix.

Address 2
Four Throws seems good . . . I can now see similarities between the “Th” of what could be “Th”rows and the “Th” in the wording “Th"e Mark of Aice Bird.

My thanks for your assistance.

Hi, I can confirm the existence of Fenex Cottages in Four Throws just outside Hawkhurst. It is a terrace of 4 weatherboarded cottages located on the Rye Road on the left hand side towards Sandhurst. I lived there for a while a few years ago. Regards.

Hello Jkirb

Many thanks for your input. Quite amazing to find someone who not only knows the place/structure but also has first hand experience of it.

I can now rewrite the that portion of my documentation to make it specific versus my current speculative interpretation.

If I may impose on you some more . . . Obviously the cottages have changed somewhat over the years, e.g., the interiors - electric/gas, modernised etc . . . but could you provide any details of how they might have been . . . slate roof . . . number of rooms . . . one level or two . . .

Not often one gets a chance to put actual detail (nd a mental picture) together.

Regards

I appreciate that your post was made a long while ago, but the lady Alice BIRD that you mention was my gt grandmother. Out of curiosity what was the name of your ancestor who died ?

You can see a photo of one of the cottages and it's modernised interior on these estate agents details

Thank you for posting the information. I have added the details to my ancestry documentation. One can only speculate on what my ancestor would now make of it all, but i says a lot that a structure erected in 1834 has continued to provide accommodation.
