Help Wanted in Deciphering Handwriting
« on: Monday 24 April 06 18:04 BST (UK) »
The two addresses are both from the same death certificate of an ancestor who died in Hawkhurst, Kent.

Address 1 reads:
“Twentieth October 1867 ???????? Cottage, Hawkhurst”

Address 2 reads:
“The Mark of Alice Bird Present at the death ????? ???? ?????? Hawkhurst”.

Thanks for any input.

How about Fenix Cottage and Fa*er Her son.
Agree on this being a difficult one.  Lesanne

The first one looks to me like Fenix Cottage, a mis-spelling of Phoenix.  The 1861 census shows that Alice Bird is living in London Road, Hawkhurst, and on the same page (also London Road) are three households enumerated as Phoenix Cottages.

I can't read Alice Bird's address on your certificate, but she appears in Hawkhurst in several of the censuses.
