Painswick Poor Law and Barstady Records 1828-1838

Samuel Swain of Painswick was arrested for stealing wheat in 1830, and for stealing a sheep in 1831. He was transported to New South Wales in 1833, leaving his wife Patience (nee Wright) and four children.  The family followed him to Australia in 1838, but when Patience arrived she had five children.  No record of the birth of her fifth child, James, has been found, and the belief is that he was the son of a convict woman who died on the voyage.
If anyone has easy access to the Poor Law and Bastardy records for the time, I would like to know:
1. Did the family receive any assistance before 1830?
2. Did Patience receive any assistance between Samuel's transportation and her emigration?
3. Is there any evidence that Patience had a child after Samuel had been transported?

Is anyone brave enough to try?

Thanks for that suggestion Susan.  I tried the database, but all it told me was that Samuel was in gaol in 1831, which I already knew.

I suppose I'll just have to accept that all the rest of the family were good, upright, and self-supporting citizens.

I am also a descendant of Samuel Swain (via his youngest son Francis). Did you find any information?

You are a descendant of Francis?  Fantastic!!!
You are probably aware that Bill Forrest (The Descendants of Samuel Swain) stated that Francis died of typhoid on 22/2/1877 at Rangers Valley, near Tamworth, NSW, and there was no record that he had married.  I, too, have searched for a marriage record without success.
BUT Francis's mother, Patience, in her will makes provision for "Frances Sarah Swain daughter of my son the late Francis Swain."  I have searched without success for a New South Wales birth record for Frances Sarah.
So no, I haven't found any more details on the family in Gloucestershire, but if my enquiry has brought to light some information on Francis's line I'll be delighted.

Yes I have Bill's book. He has Sarah in Alfred's line. Alfred married Eliza Wright and they had 3 children Eliza died and he married Eliza Ballantine who had 8 children. The first was Sarah Frances and she was born in September 1876. The last child of Alfred and Eliza Wright was born in June 1876 so we thought Alfred was very naughty.
In fact Sarah is Eliza Ballantine and Francis Swain's daughter (and I don't think they were married) and when Francis died and Alfred's wife died they obviously  got together and Alfred adopted Sarah as his own. On Sarah's baptism and marriage certificate she has her father as Francis Swain. On her death certificate her father is Alfred so there was clearly confusion in the family. Sarah had 9 children (8 girls and 1 boy - the boy was my Granfather) but only two of them had children. nevertheless we have managed to populate the world quite well and keep Francis bloodline alive!
