Four Ashes Inn
« on: Friday 15 October 04 06:03 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can someone tell me where  the Four Ashes Inn is.  I have a death certificate for my Great grandfather and it said that he died at the Four Ashes Inn Stafford Street Wolverhampton.

My Auntie is out from England and I asked her about it and she said it is not on Stafford Street but my dad and brother said it was.

So can someone tell me where the Four Ashes Inn is or was.  My great grandfather did in 1955.

Thanks very much Jacquie.

This appears to be the current address
STATION DRIVE FOUR ASHES WOLVERHAMPTON WV10  but I think I saw somewhere that this inn was previously called something else - so perhaps the original went & the name was reused. Try an internet search - there are lots of hits

Thank you both  very much.

I did do a search for it and found lots for the one on Station Street. I did a map search and Station Street comes off Stafford Road or the other way round so maybe it is near the corner of the two street.

Megabelly thank you for reminding me about Genuki site I had forgotten about that site.

Once again thank you both.

Regards Jacquie.

hi Jacqui.

Have just read your request  and wondered if this is the Four Ashes Pub that you are looking for.

It is at Four Ashes near to Coven on the Wolverhampton to Stafford road.. the A449.

The Pub is called The Four Ashes...it sits right on the main raod.

I am intersted loosely in that pub as my Great Grandfather Edwin Beesley was the Publican there.  or at least so I think.   Is this any help??

    Regards
  Mrs Noah.

I don't think that this will be of much interest to you guys but the 1871 entry for Four Ashes Inn, 36 Stafford Street has a family headed by William and Frances  Matthew and sister in law Martha Oaks.
I'll post the whole think if any one wants it RG10-2937/31
I tried looking for the other streets mentioned at the start of that census section (Charles Street, Carp Street, Chicken Lane) and could not find them so I wonder if it has been redeveloped? Still, if you can get a map ypu should be able to find no 36. The White Hart was at 41 if that helps and Brittanica at 51.

Thank you Mrs Noah, but I am not sure if it is near Coven.  The death certificate only reads died at Four Ashes Inn Stafford Street Wolverhampton, no number is given.  His home address was given as 104 Finchfield Lane Wolverhampton. Don't know if that is near Stafford Street.

Thank you anyway regards Jacquie.

On the site above there is a list of closed pubs, including Four Ashes, Charles Street. I wonder if that was yours.

Thanks Gardener,

I've been to that site.  I think they may have put the wrong address on the death certificate.
