Blantyre Pit explosion 1879
« on: Thursday 20 April 06 20:17 BST (UK) »
Hi

I wonder if any one can help. I have it a brick wall searching my family tree.

I am trying to find out infomation on a miner that was killed in the Blantyre Pit explosion 1879.
My Great Great Great Helen Buchan lived Blantyre area and was married to a miner, which I believe to be Irish.
Helen and this gentleman had two children together John ( which I think was named after his father) and a daughter Helen.

After the mine accident, Helen could not afford to stay within the area. She soon move to Linlithgow where she became a Domestic Servant.
This is were she married my Great Great Great grandad John Hoggan, they later went on to have five other children.

I have tried searching for a marrage certificate but have had no luck, perhaps they were never married.

if any one would be able to help I would be very greatfull.

Many thanks

Joanne

Have you tried finding the childrens birth records on Scotlands People (presuming they were born in Scotland) this will give you further information regarding the parents and possibly their marital status (or lack of).

There is a list of those killed in the explosion, but with no fewer than 43 of them with the christian name John could you possibly give some idea of his age, so that it can be narrowed down.

Okay,

Having had nother look, the explosion at blantyre no1 pit claimed the lives of four Johns two of whom were single. The other two were -

Malone, John, aged 38, Brusher, left a widow and five children

O'Neil, John, aged 32, Brusher, left a widow and three children.

Hope this is of some help

Similar thread on the West Lothian board. To save anybody searching again, I posted this on it yesterday:

Hi Joanne

There's a marriage entry in 1883 on Scotlands People for a John Hoggan and Ellen Buchan in Old Monkland (Western District) Lanarkshire which looks like could be your couple.

Regards.

Monica

Dear Joanne,
Try looking at Blantyre Pit disaster in 22nd Oct 1877, this will give better results.  WWW.dmm2.org.uk/uknames/u1877-01htm  gives all the names involved.  John and James McFadyen were both killed in this disaster.  Helen Buchan married John McFadyen, he was killed then she married John Hoggan on 14 September 1883.  Went on to have 11 children.  We are still trying to work out where the Stonebanks came into things.  John Hoggan was married to a Helen Grant in 1880 and had two children to her before Helen Buchan in 1883.
John Hoggan is my grandfather.  regards  Bonar
