Hi

By 1883, it would seem unlikely that the birth was not registered, so my only thought would be that the name has been incorrectly spelt in the register or index. Given that you have searched the indexes, it would seem the Initial letter of the surname could perhaps be incorrect. You know the exact date of birth so it could be worth a query to GRO or the Hampshire record office as to the cost of a search of the actual register - presumably the register is in date order, so it may be quite simple. My grandmother had to resort to this when she tried to get a passport in the 1970s (this was in Australia). Her father could not write/spell and his accent must have completely lost the registrar as her registered name bore little resemblance to the reality 75 years later.

on freebmd there is an entry :

marriage -

Henry Everett  reg. at Portsea Island March 1884  2b  656

The brides do not include an Elizabeth....but there is a Frances Elizabeth Mitchell.

What do you think ?

Also,  there is a family in 1871 in Portsea

17 St Mary's Street :   (RG10  1127  Pg 32)

Richard Everett  47  Fireman  B: Dorchester
Emma   "            44                     Southampton
Richard J         18             Portsmouth
Sarah A           15           "
George W        13            "
Henry J?             10           "
Ellen J          4                    "

Also - could Elizabeth/Violet have been born just before they married - and be under her mother's maiden name ?

Hi again

Throwing money at 1837online always bothers me - and Kathy's analysis seems very good - there has to be a name problem  somewhere.
There is a Violet Elizabeth Mitchell birth registered in lambeth (London) in the Dec 1883 period, unlikely - but perhaps she went to london for the birth?

The Henry J Everett in St Mary's Street isn't the one and the one born in Drimpton on the 1881 census isn't either. We sent for the certificates several years ago. They both had daughters with similar names as my grandmother so may be related in some way. My Henry Everetts wife Elizabeth gives a birth town of Llandovery,Carmarthen on one census and Cardiff,Glamorgan on another but I don't know her maiden name and I can't find a marriage for them.My Henry was in the navy and then became a ticket writer, but appears not to be on the 1881 census and neither are his parents Wiliam and Cornelia. We have a birth certificate for Henry. His father William is on the 1891 census is a naval pensioner living in a boarding house with another son.Henry's mother was Cornelia Wands nee Carr.Grateful for all the help and suggestion.Thank you everyone!!
