1901 census lookup please.
« on: Wednesday 19 April 06 23:49 BST (UK) »
Please excuse me but i think i first put this request out on the wrong board.

I am looking for my great grandfather WILLIAM MCKEGG.
I have looked up and down the 1901 census, change the spelling of surname many different ways but to no avail.
He was born in YORK in 1878.
He married MARY MCHALE(surname spelt wrong on records) in LEEDS in 1899.
They had a son,JOHN in LEEDS in 1899.
By the time their second son,DENNIS was born in YORK  in 1902 they were back in YORK.
Help me before i go round the bend.

PLEASE.

Regards

Vanessa

Can you give more information about William - his occupation/parents and where you have found him and his family on earlier censuses and how the surname was spelt?

Regards

Valda

Good morning Valda.

1881. Bridget Mckegg. Aged 35yrs. Farm worker. Born Ireland.
living with son William aged 2 years on long close lane, York.
In 1881 Bridget remarries to a John Drinkell. But in the 1891 census she is back with her son and using the name Mckegg.
Then to confuse matters she says she is 59yrs old and born in America and her son William a 42 yrs old labourer. Bridget died in 1892 after that i can not find william.
Williams father, DENNIS mckegg was born in selby in 1849 and his surname has been spelt MCAGE. Dennis`s parents surname was spelt MCCAIG on their marriage in ripon in 1847.
Dennis on the 1851 census (MCKEY) in York.
Dennis on the 1861 census(MCKEG) in York
Could not find him on the 1871 census. He married Bridget in 1878.

Sorry for being long winded but this is all i have found out at the moment and maybe you will understand why i feel i am going mad.

Hope you can throw some light on this.

Regards

Vanessa

P.s   sorry. The addresses for them all was the same, ST DENNIS`S, WALMGATE, YORK.
