I've had a quick look on the 1871 census on for you, and I think I've found him, but the info doesn't quick tally with what Welsh Jen has posted for 1861.

Alexander Bassett 44  -, - Head  Civil Engineer Llandaff  Glamorgan
Ellen M Bassett 40  -, - Wife  Llandaff  Glamorgan
Ellen M Bassett 13  -, - Daughter  Llandaff  Glamorgan
Fanny E Bassett 10  -, - Daughter  Llandaff  Glamorgan
Herbert T Bassett 9  -, - Son  Llandaff  Glamorgan

Where born is given as -,- on index, and I can't quite make it out myself on the original.

Here it is

Hi Amy

It is Wiltshire Great Cheverell
(take a look at 1st 1861 entry, I think it reads the same)

I show Alexander Bassett the son of Rev. Alexander Bassett and Miss Bellamy. This Alexander was the son of Charles Bassett of Sigginstone who was the son of RIchard and Joan (Thomas) Bassett. Please contact me for more information about this line. You can find my contact information at my Bassett website at www.bassett.net/dna where I have posted old newsletters and results from my Bassett DNA project.
