PLEASE HELP
Only info I have on my old family member is his name, William Henry Burkhardt, born abt 1877 in Hale England, he died at Geraldton Western Australia aged 56 in 1933. Don't know when or how he got there?? maybe by ship through Victoria Australia?
William Henry came to Australia ??? married Florence May Hardbottle in 1910.
From his marriage certificate his father was given as Charles Burkhardt (deceased soldier)not sure of army, presumably German, His mother given as Edith Burkhardt (nee Langley??) (hard to read sir name on certificate).

Charles Burkhardt (his father) was suppose to have died from war wounds in Prussian wars. Edith was said to receive a German pension after his death.
A Charles Burkhardt shows in 1871 census not sure if it is him and cannot see rest of household.
I'm not sure even where Hale is, whether it is Near Liverpool? or  a part of Surrey??
Charles Burkhardt (Williams father)was suppose to have had a brother (name unknown but Uncle to William Henry) involved in a German shipping line and the young William Henry Burkhardt is rumoured to have worked his way to Australia on one of his company ships.
Any help at all in tracing his origin and family members much appreciated,
Sorry very very very much appreciated.  :)    Thanks   Rumplestiltskin

Hi,

There are several Hales in England besides the ones you mention!

However, I suspect it may be the Hale near Altringham which is now in Greater Manchester but was Cheshire.  The reasoning behind this is that there was this family living in Bowdon in the 1871. (Hale was in the parish of Bowdon.)

1871
Rees Nook?, Bowdon, Cheshire

Francis Burghardt, H, M, 60?, Export Merchant, Prussia British Subject
Eliza, Wife, M, 54, London Middlesex
Charles, Son, U, 23, Do National Service, Prussia British Subject
Frank W G, Son, U, 21, Merchants Clerk, Prussia British Subject
Mary E Rawson, Companion, U, 30, Companion,Manchester LAncashire
Sarah Bates, Serv, U, 18, Under Housemaid,  Northenden Cheshire
Eliza Thomason, Serv, U, 27, Cook, Heathlane? Shropshire
Margaret Mawson?,Serv, U, 35, Housemaid, Autubus Cheshire

I can only find Frank (Francis) in later census`s and he was still unmarried on the 1901 - I wonder if he was the Uncle in question.  He was variously listed as Merchant and Agent.

If you go to www.ancestry.co.uk and select England and Wales BMD Index (Beta) you can view the actual GRO indexes.  You may be able to find Williams Birth or Charles marriage.  If William was born in Hale, Cheshire then it should show up as Altrincham.

Regards,
Mo

A bit of useless information for you - I was born and lived in Hale for nearly 60 years - some old photos of my shop etc on my website here:

Hi,

Not an answer to your question - but....
On the 1871 census district information is a list of Roads in Bowdon - the one before yours is Post Office Place - there is a photo of the Polygon, Bowdon, which includes the post office here:
http://www.francisfrith.com/pageloader.asp?page=/shop/prints/printSelector.asp&neg=58602&collectionid=10&townid=B165&start=1&action=prevphoto

I think that Rees Nook was a large house nearby

Cheers
