Was My Gran in Scotland? or was she never born!!!
« on: Monday 17 April 06 20:29 BST (UK) »
I have my Grans death cert and Marriage cert.
I can't find her or any of her siblings on any records in England at all.
She was born  1890ish per the two certs i do have.
I have looked 5 years either side of that date and no certs in the pro or census returns for her or any family that I could  link togehter.

On her marriage cert she is down as Jessie Simpson. She had several siblings Lizzie, Harry, Alfred. Her father was Henry Simpson who died in 1903(ISH) (cant find him  in any death register in England either.)
Her mother was Isabella Simpson Nee Mcdonald or Christie or Christie Mcdonald. (Again nothing in the English records to tie any one together! under any combination of these names)

After her first husband's death Isabella apparently married a Phillip Craven. Guess what........Hes a mystery too, (Although he wouldn't be on the 1901 census with all the other information to link him to the family if Henry only died in 1903!)

So............ I'm stumped. Then, Auntie said Oh Jessie was born in Scotland!!
Can anyone throw any light on this lot as I'm getting no-where very fast >:(

Thanks very much to ANYONEwho even reads this post and throws even a tiddler my way. It may be the break I need.

Do you have anything which could tie down an area in Scotland ..... searching all records for a birth of a female Jessie Simpson in Scotland between 1885 and 1895 gives back a return of 105 individuals and unfortunately Scotlands people does not allow a search involving parents.

Dizzy,

A free search (though you need to register - which is free) on the pay-per-view ScotlandsPeople site finds only 23 records (on 1 page) for the death of a H*y SIM*SON (good idea to use wildcards) between 1900 and 1910.

The minimum payment is six pounds for 30 credits.  To view/download that 1 page of death records would cost only 1 credit.  No doubt the ages of some would immediately rule them out.  Then it would cost 5 credits each time to view/download an actual certificate.  Scottish death certificates are very informative - information would include the name of the deceased's widow so that should enable to pick whether or not you have the right Henry/Harry ...

Unfortunately I couldn't find any marriage between 1875-1900 of a H*y Sim*son to a M*cdonald or to a Christ* (there are a few of a H*y Sim*son to an Isabella but ...).  Nor any marriage at all of a Phil*ip Craven (1855-1930 - the whole period of Statutory Register Marriages) ...

Just to add to your woes, Jessie is often interchangeable with Janet in Scotland.

If you do decide to search on SP (though it's not looking promising) there is good advice in the post 'Optimise ScotlandsPeople searches' by David Douglas at the top of this board.

Perhaps you should see whether you can get any more information out of 'Auntie'.

Hi Dizzy

try Janet rather than Jessie. In Scotland the two names are interchangeable.

Russell
1941-2016
Oman in Caithness, Reside in Renfrewshire,
Roan or Rowan Kirkcudbrightshire/Ayrshire
Watsons in Kilrenny and Mortons in Edinburgh.

Dizzybare - "Her father was Henry Simpson who died in 1903(ISH) (cant find him in any death register in England either.)"

Have you tried HARRY?
