Hello Ltudball,

What denomination was the Gilmour and Sherman families? Were they Catholics, members of the Established Church (Anglicans or Church of Ireland) or Presbyterians?

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

If they died in Scotland their death certificates might have some useful information need to find the family in Ireland. See Scotland's People for what information is on Scottish certificates and how to order them.

Hello All,

Many thanks for your replies...delighted to find the marriage details. Where did you find the information OTTO...did you have to traipse around for it...the effort is much appreciated!

I do have their Scottish death certs from SP which gives me parents names but not the area in Ireland. I got the marriage date from one of their children's birth cert...looks like the informant perhaps made a wee error!

According to Otto, looks like they were Church of Ireland.

Very much appreciate this info...gets me a step further in Ireland :)

Regards,
LTudball

Keep in mind that the wedding usually, but not always, took place in the bride's church- the groom might not have belonged to the Church of Ireland.

Hello,
Thank you again for your help.

aghadowey,
Once in Scotland,  their children married in the Church of Scotland so no real clues there. The only way I can think that I might find their religion is to check the poor relief records to see if they ever registered there.

Mary,
The spelling of Gilmer/ore has been consistently Gilmour once they arrived in Scotland and it is still used in middle names in our family today. It is good to know that there are other possibilities if I can get a bit further back in Ireland. I have their death certs and 27 looks right for Martha and not far off for William. It was a b. in law who registered him so he might not have been quite sure. Thanks for that.

Much appreciated,
Linda
