Thanks for this. David Duff and his wife Isabella Gilmore had a son George born in May 1839 so that is almost certainly their son buried in 1840. Jean Duff is interesting and there may well be a connection - some work is needed on this one.

David Duff was a weaver in the 1841 census but subsequently became a miner - this is the occupation shown on his wife's death certificate, so he probably lived a few years beyond 1841. His father might be Thomas Duff as this is the name of his eldest son (assuming that there is not an earlier child that I have failed to locate). My tree is online on A; there are several other trees which suggest that David Duff's parents were Robert Duff and Isobel Baldie but for various reasons I am convinced that they are wrong. Alex.
Sinclair: Lanarkshire & Antrim; McDougall: Bute; Ramsay: Invernesshire; Thomson & Robertson: Perthshire; Brown: Argyll; Scott: Ayrshire: Duff: Fife.

you should also look at this mount family name site:

http://themountfamily.com/

some of info seems a bit naive (it is from an American side of family who clearly don't know England) but it has a family crest from the mounts in kent from Burkes peerage with explaination of symbals
