On the 1901 census it says that Anna McDonald was born at Aysdale Scotland(1863). I would love to know where that is, or is it a mistake on the census.

Hi Jean,

I've never heard of Aysdale.

You could get a copy of her birth certificate from Scotland's People (www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk) and from that you would be able to trace where she was born. (You'll also get details of her father and mother).

Thank you, the people at Dumbarton archives couldn't make sense of ' Aysdale' when we visited last year. I will follow your suggestion. Fingers crossed that I can find the right Anna McDonald. (My mother in Law says she remembers being told that she was the daughter or granddaughter of Sir Hector McDonald!!!! ) Can't find him either! I loved our visit to Bonhill though.

The only place that sounds like Aysdale (to a census enumerator that is!) that comes to mind is Easdale on the Isle of Seal near Oban.
If that's the spot it is small enough that you should find her.

Thank you, I needed a fresh idea (I have searched for her for ages)Her husband to be came from Bonhill. I had a look for Easdale on the map. It amazes me how much people travelled in those days so we shall see. Thanks again.

Hi,  I've got an Aysdale, Scotland on a 1861 census entry.  The ancestor I was looking for was actually born in Acharacle, Argyll, I'm pretty sure it's the same one due to his wife/children and their birth dates.  I wonder if it was due to someone completely mishearing Argyll, in my case.

Sorry don't know what happened there. It was good to see that someone else had an Aysdale, and how it was resolved. I'll have a look and see if Anna was from there. Thank you.

Just watch on the searches. If she wasn't Ann/ie/e and was Anna, quite often the original name could be Hannah or Annabella.
