1861 census look up brooks
« on: Thursday 13 April 06 10:06 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

I am trying to trace the Brooks family of Tiverton Devon. who could possibly have moved to staffordshire.

Ricky 1 gave me the following family in 1851.

1851 census H0 107/1889 folio 186 pg 19

Elizabeth Brooks widow 26 Somerset Thurlow?
Sarah 5 Tiverton Devon
Anna 3 " "
Charity 1 " "

John Brooks visitor 25 Stafford Hyh Ride?
James Brooks visitor 20 " "
? Bolton 23 Notts Newark
Mary Meeton 25 Devon Hockworths?
Leana Meeton 10mths Tiverton

My great great grandma was Sarah Ann Brooks she married John Fowell in Cheadle.

1861 census for Sarah shows her as an inmate in Union Workhouse Cheadle age 14 RG9/1953 folio 22 pg 37.

But i am finding it difficult to trace her family,  I have searched on ancestry for the above family and have found Charity Brooks abt 1850 living in staffordshire.  Would someone kindly look her up for me please.

Thanking you in advance

Jan

hi Jan thanks for the reply,

Looking at that entry Im still none the wiser hahaha.

Charity's Mother was Elizabeth she was a widow in 1851 and came from Somerset Thurlow  ???  So don't think this is the right family.

I had two possible families for My g g grandma sarah in 1861, the one in Union Workhouse cheadle and the other still in Tiverton.  Seeing as she married in Cheadle I decided to go along that line. The only other possibility was Elizabeth Brooks family in 1851.

I'll go to the devon board and see if anyone can trace Elizabeth in 1861.

Otherwise, back to the drawing board for me  :(

Thanks jan

Jan
Will look for Elizabeth for you - can't see her immediately. Have you found Sarah for certain on later censuses? What are the absolute facts you have?

No Elizabeth Brooks born Thurlow, Somerset or in case she remarried Elizabeth born Thurlow anywhere - trouble is she may have given another birthplace  It is always easier to work backwards - so suggest you post details for Sarah on later censuses if you have her plus everything else you know or otherwise what you know and we can search for on censuses.

Hi jan,

Thanks for your reply thought it was a long shot to see if you still were linked into the website,
the Brooks family I have traced like you to tiverton devon, I am related to a family which I think may be cousins or aunts of the sarah brooks/fowell family. In the 1871 census where they are at Greenhill in Cheadle there is a domestic servant by the name of Emma Brooks also from Tiverton Devon this is my great times 4 grandmother. Originally i thought that the link between devon and cheadle must have been for work but having searched for them in Devon I think that they had family that lived in the Cheadle staffs area and also in Devon. On the 1851 census in Devon on Sarah b/f family there are a couple of visitors who say they are born in Staffordshire and later there in 1861 there is a link with a Charity Brooks who is Sarah's sister who is living with a Mary Jarvis who is living ion the district of Forsbrook in a area of that village called Blythe Marsh. I have done some research into this and it seems that this area was known for earthenware hawkers being near the potteries there were goods that were good value to buy and then sell for a profit, the Brooks family had a bit of a network set up I think buying these items and then going across the country back to Devon selling the wares. In Devon the families occupations on the census are hawkers so that explanation could work.

I think the 1861 census with sarah in Cheadle workhouse is likely to be her and her sister is also on the same page.
If you know anything of the link between Sarah and Emma then let me know.
If you could let me know any info on the Fowell family as well as when I saw she was out of the workhouse and married with children to John Fowell I thought it was wonderful my line are constantly in the workhouse! tough times.
Have you got a pic of greenhill house it was a lovely building. I can send you one if you like.
Thanks so much for replying
