Louisa Carter married in Sydney
« on: Thursday 13 April 06 00:42 BST (UK) »
Need Help please.
Louisa Carter married Samuel Cress in Prebyterian Scots Church, Pitt St., Sydney in 1854. District QC Reg V1854954  81/1854. In 1855 they went from Australia to Wellington on the 'Shamrock'. In 1856 they had Charles Samuel, Louisa in 1857, both in Wainuiomata, Wellington.
The 'Shamrock' logs show Samuel as 27 and Louisa as 21. Samuel was born in Bradford-on-Avon in 1828, but I don't know of Louisa's past before the marriage. She may have been born c1834 in Australia or the UK. They had a later son, John Henry, and on his marriage cert, mother is given as Louisa Elvidge Cress nee Carter.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Jim

Have you found her death . Place of birth may be listed on the death certificate.
If the informant knew the information.

I had a look on the NSW state records site lots of Carter's but no Lousia.
She could have arrived on a ship into Victoria or Queensland.

Wish I could be more help.

Do you have an approx birth date for Louisa. There is a Louisa Carter arrived in Australia in 1853 - aged 30
CARTER LOUISA 30 AUG 1853 JOHN BARROW B 047 006

Hi Trish,
Many thanks for getting in touch.
On the 'Shamrock' Louisa was 21, that was in 1855, so I would put her DOB  around 1834. She could have arrived in 1853. Does the entry mean Carter Louisa arrived on 30th Aug 1853, or Carter Louisa aged 30 arrived in Aug 1853?
Still checking shipping but nothing yet.
Bye for now,
Jim

Hi Jim

I obviously didn't read your post very well - senior moment - my second name. If Louisa was 21 in 1855, she wasn't 30 (which is what it means) in 1853.

My only thought would be it may be a transcription error (faint hope) and she was 20. The immigrants into Melbourne list included anyone that was on the boat, many travelled on to Sydney.

Gennig has been very kind in checking the Melbourne films for me - so a request to her to double check the age may be worthwhile.

Trish

Looking at the AVRI, there is a Louisa Carter baptised in NSW in 1843
Father Stephen Mother Martha V18431961 27A
Parish:   Black Creek, Bulwarra; Clifden; Hinton; Morpeth; Maitland; Hunter., Church of England

About 10 years out in the other direction  :)  so I guess unlikely.
A transcript would probably not give much more information as it is an OPR.

Hi Trish,
I have days like that too! I think it's something to do with ill fitting underwear.
I don't think the 1843 is a contender as she would be having kids at 13.
Sadly there are loads of Louisa Carters in England born c1834. I'll try to narrow it down by eliminating those still there in the 1861 census and see how many I'm left with.
I'm sure she's on a ship's list somewhere but it may not have been transcribed yet.
Thanks once again for your help though, it's much appreciated.

Hi Jim

Not sure if you are still researching Louisa Carter and I am unable to help with her earlier days, but my gg grandmother is Rose Cress Elvidge, was born and married in NZ her parents were Louisa Cress Elvidge nee Carter, unfortnately I am unable at this point to locate her marriage to John Elvidge, but other family have researched and found that it is the same Louisa that you seem to be talking about, she had abt 4 children to Samuel and another 4 to John Elvidge, would be great to connect and maybe compare notes.

Hi Mel

As this is some way from my direct lineage I haven't delved in this area for five or six years.

I would imagine you have a lot more on it than me but this is what I have.

Samuel Cress, baker, born Bradford-on-Avon 26/12/1826 baptised 11/2/1827 at Wesleyan Methodist Church.

Louisa Elvidge Carter born c1834 died 12/4/1906 Tararua NZ. Married 1854 Presbyterian Scots Church, Pitt St., Sydney. District QC Reg V1854954. Took ship 'Shamrock' to Wellington in 1855 (aged 21).
Buried Plot 5378 Old Gorge Cemetery, Tararua NZ, aged 72.
The only children I have are Charles Samuel Cress, Labourer 28/4/1856 Wainuiomata, Wellington NZ, Louisa Cress 30/11/1857 Wainuiomata, Wellington NZ, John Henry Cress 7/7/1862 Ferry Road, Christchurch, NZ. He married Amelia Gibson on 2/1/1886 at Presb Church Kaikoura, and died 13/11/1937.

If you would care to look at my tree on Genes Reunited you may find out more. Hope it's of some help.

Best Regards

Jim
